Growing vegetables and working in your garden is officially cool. Requires patience, but the results u get in the end brings immense joy and peace of mind. I wanted to have my own veggies and this is the first attempt we are gonna take inshallah this year. I got seeds for

Bhindis
Karai'laas
Kaddoo
Pai'thaa
courgette
halwa kadoo

Seeds of the listed veggies.

http://i577.photobucket.com/albums/ss217/AyeshaUK2009/Gardening/DSCN6142.jpg

Then we prepared these vegetable patches today. The square empty space is gonna be my Mini Herb Garden inshallah and next to it is tiny flower bed. Way to go but just taking the first step towards a nice looking and well maintained garden insahllah. Here's what been done today.... Will keep updating as we grow veggies inshallah.

use CD`s affixed on a piece of wood dangling down blowing in the wind, when the sunlight hits the cds they send out beams of light in all directions that kinda scares the birds and the cats :)

Foreveryoung
27th March 2011, 12:49 AM
The thing is that my vegetable patch is in the area where there is no sunlight at all. If u see in my Climbing Vines thread, then u will get to know its location. All birdies and even cat like to sit under the shade of tree especially in summers and naturally the area is always watered hence softness and the coolness of the soil attracts /
Secondly ur cd idea wont apply there because of no sunlight =(

its amazing to be able to grow such a wide variety of veg because of your hot climate! What country are you in? I would love to grow Okra but unfortunately don't have a greenhouse!

Veg I now have growing are: Cucmbers (still small!) Courgettes (same!), pumpkins, tomatoes, chillies, carrots, peppers, spring onion, lettuce, radish, beetroot, potatoes, spinach...think that is it! Herbs: mint, coriander, thyme, parsley, basil, chives

Hi ash.

congrats on your bhindi :GreenThumbs: its actually my fave desi-dish to :)

its really great when you sow a seed and 7 days later you see it sprouting and even better when that seed grows into a plant and then starts to flower and you can see the tiny fruit developing, thats the best feeling and it always makes my day, and thanks for the great pics.

The okra needs lots of heat just like aubergines/egg plants thats why i never had much success with them outdoors in Uk and i dont have a greenhouse yet.

cant wait for your pumpkins to develop, i wonder how many pumkins you will get on the vine, you should keep on growing one to see how big you can get it. :cigar2:

i grew one 2 seasons go, sadly no pics as they went down when my laptop crashed and i dint make a back up :D

i got 3 football sized pumkins out of it and the vine grew to almost 15 feet in length.

^ You are right Riz. There is just something about gardening that soothes the soul. It's the sheer magic and satisfaction of planting a tiny seed and nurturing it to an edible size. I like knowing that something lives because of me I just love spending my time in our garden because my thoughts turn toward my mother who instilled in me the love of gardening and of course there is a sense of accomplishment when I can see things growing and ripening. =) Everything about gardening is good! (Except the drought and weeds) =)

I seem to have some insects eating away the leaves of my plants. I found all my plants damaged this morning while watering them. Squash, roses, hibiscus, okras … all of them =( If anybody has had this problem or knows how to deal with it please let me know. Shall I use some pesticides ? I never wanted to use them on my veggies….

Here are the pics below.
http://i577.photobucket.com/albums/ss217/AyeshaUK2009/Gardening/DSCN8258.jpg

Can too dry and too hot weather make leaves dry ? I don’t know what went wrong with my healthy growing squash and bitterguord vines. Yellow leaves are developing rapidly.

ash,

the first pic looks like insect/caterpillar damage, if you can get some neem oil and mix it in with water in a spray bottle and spray the leaves all over not forgetting to spray under the leaves too in the early evenings, do that once a week and keep you eye on it hopefully that will get rid of them..

the yellowing of the squash leaves looks like a nitrogen deficiency use some fertilizer and water in to plants, do this once a week for a few weeks then see if it gets better...

the browning on the rose bush could be heat stress, this happens in dry hot conditions, best thing to do is pull of the damaged leaves and cut the plant back and dig around the soil at base of plant and loosen up the soil and feed some fertilizer to it hopefully this will work....

and please keep us informed.

Harvesting bumper crop of Zucchinis.

We should harvest zucchini when it measures 6 to 8 inches long, which typically takes 5 to 8 weeks. They will grow much larger if you let them, but the smaller plants are more tender and flavorful. I spotted so many today and decided to take them off the vine. I would have harvested them even when they were smaller but never really saw them as its so bushy that they hid easily behind the leaves. During their peak production time, it's not uncommon to harvest zucchini several times a week.

My excitement grew wild when I saw huge black coulourful butterflies coming out of the vine as well as several black bumble bees with shiny skin. For about the past week, we’ve seen quite a few Bumble Bees roaming about getting nectar :) But when we touched the top of the vine, wow ...... they came out from ever leaf . lol. Such a pretty sight it was mA. and birds chirping in the garden :)

Talking of bugs Riz, another thing I want to mention before I forget is that if you remember i shared some pics with you in the beginning showing how my leaves turned yellow and we were trying to identify the cause ? While looking at the pics of some Garden bugs today, I recognized this one type called "squash bug". I shared its pic in Gardening thread on MP. So while reading about that bug in detail, it was mentioned that they have piercing-sucking mouth-parts which they use to suck the sap out of leaves. Their feeding causes yellow spots that eventually turn brown. The feeding also disrupts the flow of water and nutrients, which can cause wilting. And then how can you forget those chewed leaves ?? Right ? Those were because of cucumber beetle =) They love to munch these plants. so case solved. lol

So my friends,, less talk and more action. Here I present my Zucchinis Harvest.
