View Full Version : What can I plant now?

It's july! But my green fingers are itching especially since the arrival of my tomatoes :D so I was wondering what I could grow indoors now, or what I could plant out? Plants that produce fruit/veg?

My boyfriend got me a package of spinach and they claim to take only 41 days, so you could try that? I've also got some swiss chard going and supposedly they'll grow late into the season so you might still have time with that. (Plus they taste great - very important :) )

Yaay! Thanks, I might try that, right now I've got some french runner beans and carrot seeds (but I'm running out of compost :() Can I start any of those off in seed trays? I got a major bargain yesterday from sainsburys; 3 seed trays for 24p! Bought 4 :p

you can still sow lettuce+herbs+radish+potatoes+carrots..
regards french runner beans, You can start them of in seed trays just remember the roots are going to grow really quickly, or what i have done is to start them of in the ground so i dont have to transplant them from pots or seed trays, you can grow them in pots aswell, I usually buy B&Q buckets for 99 pence each and then drill holes at the bottom and use them as pots, the same size pot will cost you around £2.99. You could also germinate the seeds in bio-degradable pots like i have been using this way when it comes to transplant your seedlings you dont have to disturb the rootball and they are very cheap to buy
here is a pic of my carrot seedlings in a bucket, i have allready thinned out the seedlings, I am a first time carrot grower so lets see what i can do :)
I used buckets for my tulip container thread, here is the link http://www.muslimgrower.com/discussionforum/showthread.php?t=22

:D Today I potted some runner beans (in pots, and about 3 in the ground), carrot seeds (in 1 deepish pot, and some in the ground), a potato (I found one with 'eyes' in the veg basket and dumped it into a half a bag of compost (my interest was piqued by your potato growing thread!) and lastly I planted four onions that I found had shoots growing out of the tops! Not sure if much will grow because of the weather and because the soil is kinda crap quality (apart from the potato in the bag) but it was still fun to do so! The runner beans are in pots about a hand high, and the same wide. The carrot seeds are in a pot about 2 hands high and a hand and a half wide (haven't got my tape measure on me :p) and the potato is in a growbag that is half full, so in approx. 25 litres of compost?
Would they be fine in these pots or will I have to transplant/top-up? I'm thinking of creating a compost pile because I can't keep buying it, tis expensive!
I also restaked my tomato plants with bamboo sticks, they were getting very unruly! I wanted to be sure they'd stay up because they are developing lots of fruits (1st one is turning red, yaay!) and they were also battered by the rain. All in all twas a good day. I'm off to go start my compost heap now!
Oo I forgot to add, when I was planting the onions I found snail eggs! First time I've seen them, was quite interesting (and shocking, either thought they were mite eggs or some kind of fungus )

Too much soil, the empty bag only needs around 4 inches of soil and you rest the spud on top, as the vines grow you add the soil and roll the sleeves of the bag higher. Please take a look at the potatoe thread for more information.

 will sort that out tomorrow then inshAllah!

20th July 2008, 02:51 PM
I've fixed it now, moved it over to another grow bag, filled it with around 4 inches of soil, stuck the potatoes on top and covered them with about an inch of soil :D what about onions?

well done... :D when things get intresting with the spud grow you might want to post your progress on the potatoe thread.
If you are growing the onions that you have at home they might not finish, you might want to get some shallots from a shop and grow them, you will be guaranteed a yield.. I had a friend who planted onions from home and it didnt work out for him, I have never grown onions i will be doing that in the next season along with other vegetables like brussel sprouts, pumpkin etc.....

I may do (with the potatoes) if they do well that is! The onions are a sort of experiment so if they grow at all I will be surprised!
I planted seven pots of french beans (two to a pot)....and a cat overturned 6 of them :o

good luck with the onions, are you planting them in the ground ?

my garden peas are coming up slowly.. you will have to use canes ( i am sure you know that ) because once established they shoot up really quick, with the french beans when you see the second set up leaves unfolding some gardners pinch out the second set this way the plant gets bushier, i have tried it on many occasions and it does work, it almost doubles in size

Thanks, yep, they're in the ground.
I'm fine with using canes, I just planted a ton of beans straight into the ground. I'm not sure if I want bushes, I think I'd prefer them to be tall, although once they are of a good enough height I'd probably do that. It was the same with my tomatoes, I didn't pinch out the growing top so they shot up :D and I like!

Have done so :D (minus the herbs)
How long does it usually take for onions to grow? I'm not sure whether mine are growing at all, and I could use the extra space to plant more carrots or relocate some beans.
How long does it usually take for beans to grow? (will go double check with the other thread in a mo) I have LOADS and not much space, but not enthusiatic to cull any of them :( I planted so many, and the packet said to plant two to a place as some of them may not germinate...at present I think about 95% of them have and now I haven't got a clue what to do with most of them
Potatoes are coming along well, love that they aren't floppy plants!
I also bought a tri-colour chilli plant today, hoping it'll have a growth spurt because at present it's a bit teeny. I'm not sure as to how long they last for though, are they perennial? I repotted it (the pot it was in was tiny!) and now I'm just waiting to see how it fares.

11 weeks.. if you saw onion seeds it will take around 24 weeks, usually the onion seeds are sown in early april to early june.

Alright, calm down!! I'm going to give some away, I'll pot a few in a grow bag perhaps and then I'll cull the rest :( How close should the plants be? so i know how many to pull - they are currently in 2 rows 40cm apart.

True, I'm just hoping my second set outlive the first now! (First bunch of seedlings disappeared for some reason).
I just got a steel tube arch frame(£2) and a mini compact greenhouse(VERY SMALL)(£3) from woolworths! End of summer is definitely the best time to shop for the next year!!
That reminds me, Sainsburys also had a pack of 3 seed trays for 24p.
Bargains, bargains! :boots:

Heres a pic, toms to the right (out of control), potatoes to the left, and beans(and one chilli plant) in the middle in the mini greenhouse :D (yes I know those unorthodox containers are teeny, they need to be repotted soon iA)

Yup!! :D Sharp eyes you have there, I tied one end of the greenhouse to the brick, didn't want a sharp gust of wind to carry it away:eek: It doesn't have anything to keep it on the ground.
Those carrot plants look wonderful! I think the ground might be too hard for mine, they grow a bit and then they just sorta pop out of the ground and disappear  I did dig the ground up thoroughly before hand but still might be too hard.

Do chickpeas grow in the UK? I remember some sprouted once and if I had taken the time to plant them they might have grown:)

I semi-cleaned my garden today. Pruned some tomato plants, some bean plants (yes, some have survived despite the crazy snail attacks!) and harvested the last couple of toms off of three plants, then pulled them up!
Potatoes have been staked to prevent any more abuse/attempts to snap stems
Moved the greenhouse onto the stone floor and put the few bean plants inside, the pomegranate seeds (yes I dug through and found a few, they had roots so they've been rescued!) and a couple of apple seedings (I hope they'll pull through). The olive plant is in there too as it was leaning like a drunkard this morning after yet another attack. Chilli plant is in there too.
The tomato plants have produced yet more flowers (!) and I still have loads of fruit ripening despite the recent harvests.
I have a ton of seedling trays and some compost, I want to try and germinate something else, any ideas?
Outlook=optimistic!
Oh and, as I started off......
What can I plant now? :D
Riz

onion & shallot sets & spring cabbages are sown in autumn (bit late to sow now but you may be able to get hold of mini plants from garden centres/nurseries).

ill show you a pic of seeds MG got given for free from English seed vendors online.. really quality "duchy seeds" from prince Charles owned estate.. 2 kinds of herb mint and liquorish, F1* tomatoe and radish seeds
F1 hybrid is a term used in genetics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetics) and selective breeding (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_breeding). F1 stands for Filial 1, the first filial generation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation) seeds/plants or animal offspring resulting from a cross mating of distinctly different parental types. The offspring of distinctly different parental types produce a new, uniform variety with specific and/or desirable characteristics from either or both parents. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F1_hybrid

RIIIIIIIIIIIIIZ!!
I finally got my garden into some sort of order today, now my green fingers are itching :p WHAT ELSE CAN I PLANT!! :D
Okay so I'm planning to have a main cucumber patch and a tomato patch, the radishes are in buckets/containers and so is the basil, the coriander and the garlic. I have some space around the gladioli/irises/roses so I want to plant some flowers which can survive in close proximity to them, same around the dahlias. What flower seeds can I sow there?
Alsoooo, I have the space at the back of the garden which is quite shaded, what can I plant there? I'll move the greenhouse there later on if necessary, but what edible things can I grow there?
