you going to grow the cukes in a pot !? i grew mine in a grow bag.. i think you can buy the grow bags in NY too, i had around a dozen cukes from it.. you may have to build a home made trellis for the vines to hold on to, or buy a cheap plastic one.....

I don't have much space to grow, just giving it a try to see how it turns out. You see the windows where I put my mango plants? That's the only place where I get sunlight. So anything I grow will be around there. Roof is out of the question because this neighbor for some reason walks the dog there or probably let it unleashed. If i were to put it in a pot. How deep do you think it should be? I will try the trellis too. Thanks : )

hayat .
is the roof shared by other people, are you allowed to have veggies and flowers growing up there ?... it would be a cool place to grow stuff i reckon if it was possible...

you could have a nice veggie garden on that roof.. and easily build a cage around it by using chicken wire, keep the dogs out....

It's not like I am sharing it with anyone. Since I live in apartment bldg. and all the bldgs. are attached so anyone can access the roof from their side. Getting on the roof is very hectic. There are no formal stairs built. It's like fire escape stairs that allow me to get on the roof. I am pretty sure the owner won't have any problem but the dog might : ) lolz
I will see if i can build a cage around my pots and also a shed to avoid too much rain. It rains atleast twice a week or sometimes for the entire week : ( This is going to be fun hmmm....

Rub separate them sooner because the cuckes don't react to well at root damages.

Here's some updated pictures. I separated them and hoping they'd survive 'coz after I separated them, my one and half year old picked the container and brought it to show me. He was all excited. Now guess where was the plant? It was hanging next to the window 'coz i had tied up with a string :) One other pot he had thrown on the floor and the plant was gasping for some soil hehehe

Climbing on the home made trellis :) I had this frame of cupboard laying around so thought I should use it for my cukes to climb on.

Mashallah nice to see someone is about to harvest cuke. I planted in April and nothing yet. Only tons of male flowers. Could it be possible that this one will get only male flowers?

Hmm... how does the rest of your vine look? I can't tell for sure in your picture but I think the cucumber vine is the one with heart-shaped leaves on the very left. If that's it, I think it might just not be big enough yet. Also, how long have you been seeing only the male flowers? The males are the early birds that come in first and I usually don't find females until about 3 weeks-a month after the males first appear.

Your mango tree is beautiful in the background by the way :)

Male flowers are showing up since early July. I will post new pictures when i get home today. I am waiting for a scion for my mango plant from Pakistan. It will come this week Inshallah and then I will graft it :) hoping to get mangoes early.

^ that sucks! Any female flowers yet?

rubmanhayat
29th August 2010, 02:41 AM
Nope :( No female flowers on cukes. I moved everything on the roof last week and it rain 5 straight days on them. Cukes got burnt they are growing back, but still no female flowers. This is how it looked before and after :\ sorry about the blurry pics. Camera didn't wanna focus. Have to buy a new one :D

Wow those things are long! Have you fertilised them? I think that might help them put out some more flowers, hopefully a female one amongst them.

Riz

its good you have them on the roof, looks like the man changed his mind huh !!?

rubmanhayat
29th August 2010, 05:56 PM
Yup :) I was like do hell with the owner. I am moving everything up. I will deal with her when she finds out. I will sure get some plant food to feed everyone. You see what I started to build Riz. I wanted to put a chicken wire around it and put my plants in there. Returned the chicken wire and just left with this frame. Cukes are climbing on it though :)

Riz

looks great hayat, shame you dint have this frame in the start of the season though... If the owner doesn't mind you can develop the little plot on the roof for next season IA.. maybe even build a small veg patch with more crops in containers... It would be cool if other people who live there started to grow veg and flowers on that roof, just think about all the colours, you could start of a trend there hayat :)

the cuke vines love that frame, it would be a great site to see all the cukes hanging down with rich green foliage :)
