I thought there was already one of these threads... maybe I missed it?

Anyway, I have sprouts today finally - eight oregon springs, and two yellow pears :) I'm excited! Some of these little sprouts are quite silly and keen on tying their little stems into knots. *shakes head*

I am still waiting on this one. Now that I have found out that beefsteak variety kinda gets huge, the picture on the packet was kinda deceiving, I am thinking of trying to germinate plum variety as well.

Riz
9th April 2010, 03:28 PM
yeah huge and potentially juicy so good for desi cooking and pasta sauces.. i am sticking with the money maker variety though.... last years crop was still green on the vine and it was October and the weather changed so i lost the whole crop, well made compost out of it......

Not at all - around this time last year I was noticing sprouts from my old tomatoes that had rotted in the ground, they reached the fruiting stage as well (although they didn't complete it). To help speed it along give them regular feeds and make sure you control the growth.

Kirsten

My goodness, did not realize that yesterday made seven weeks.

Here are the ones that I've definitely decided to keep for myself:

http://i43.tinypic.com/16i8u8k.jpg

There are still 9 more plants (18 in total) that are still of much smaller size. I'm definitely keeping 12 for myself, so I'll probably spread out the wealth around friends once I decide which of the other three to keep. I'm still sad that one of my biggest and best looking yellow pear tomato plants got decapitated yesterday in a freak act of nature :(

I have given up on my tomatoes lol. Last year I had so many I didn't know what to do. This year they just won't grow!! and when they finally do germinate and sprout...it a SLOOOOOOWW process argh! At this rate I will have fruit in December lol! :D

anyhoo I cheated now and bought 2 plants from the high street (80p each yay!) which are a nice size (about 2 handspans tall already mashaallah!) I put them in the ground today, hopefully they will suceed where others have failed. :cheerleader:

Riz
14th May 2010, 04:58 PM
mine are still indoors and growing really well against the windowsills... still in the same tiny pots too, they have doubled in size from the previous pics, I didnt do to well with the tommie grow last season 80% of the fruit was still green and it was nearly autumn.. hope this season is better, but at the end you are at the mercy of the weather, if we get a decent summer they will turn red on the vine in early to late august..

Thanks for the reply Riz and Kirsten,
I was watering about every 3 days but now I am just checking by sticking a finger in the soil to see if its damp so this week I don't think I have watered them at all, I started last Sunday with tomato fertilizer and plan to give them another feed this Sunday,
I am growing them in a empty salmon box(big white things) in a greenhouse on a south facing wall, Thanks again for the info :)

edit : I water maybe 2-3 cups of water

Will a trough be enough for that tomato plant or you'll repot them once they get bigger?

i grew tommies in grow bags season before last and got great results... they are staying in the troughs permanently

Riz

but if space is an issue and you dont have a veg patch, this is the best solution IMO

Wow, Mashallah this is great. I didn't think tommies would flower this early. I thought they would go a few feet before they flower. How big is this one? My cantaloupes are flowering and they are hardly 5 inches so it could be just my imagination since I have no experience growing tommies :)

Riz
11th June 2010, 03:42 PM
the plant is around 12 inches in height, the other 5 tommie plants are just growing green at the moment, We had 2 days of great sunshine last week and everything in the garden started to bloom, but since then it has been cloudy...

its best to give the tommie plants nutrients if you're growing in pots and containers espically if the leaves are looking lime green.. you can go natural or use chemicals, i have a bottle of nutrients in the draw so i will be mixing that with water next time its feeding time for the tommie plants...

good job luc.. they are looking green and healthy...

if you grow in pots and containers you might want to feed them once weekly with some tomato nutrients.. In the ground the roots go down deep and plenty of goodness in the soil, but in pots you may wish to give them a little boost once a week, so i am mixing some nutes in with the water once a week..

as you can see the bottom leaves are yellowing lack of NPK , but the rest of the plant looks lush and healthy..

I gave away three to my friend and his are flowering already and they are grown way too big compared to mine. So I might take these and keep at his house. They moved to a bigger house and have a back yard now. I think it's too late to start tilling it. May be next year, Inshallah. Some of mine have got black bottoms. Think it is a case of lack of water and lack of nutrients. I have been a poor "mother" to them lately - been so busy. Will have to pay more attention to the little darlings or I'll lose them all. The best producers were a variety called Ananas. Bought these in France in 2008 and sowed the seeds this year. They are big, fat, juicy, and lovely. They don't look too pretty but they taste great.:D

Sounds like a typical case of blossom end rot (http://www.nvsuk.org.uk/growing_show_vegetables_1/tomato-blossom-end-rot.php), what a shame!

The giant beefeter tomato plants I got from the shop months back have now fruited and they are huge! Unfortunately I wasn't home for long periods, many were eaten (very red and ripe!) some exploded LOL :p

Fertiliser dude, seriously (if you aren't already). I had a second generation tomato plant sprouting in my garden last year and although it was a late grower, it flowered at a small size (and in a tiny pot actually).

:) If you see the pic in post 83 I had them in very small cut up milk galons. Just repotted them last week in that trough. I am not using any fertilizer for now. Will go check out home depot and get some. This is beaksteak variety. If I get any of 'em how do I support them considering them grow huge? :D

~Obsidian~
29th August 2010, 06:01 PM
You call those very small? Monsieur my pot was smaller! Which is why I emphasized that they flowered in spite of the size of the pot with the help of the fertilizer.

I tried using a bamboo cane to support those and it didn't work, had to tie the plant to a very stout stick in the end. The tomatoes get so big and so heavy that you'll probably need to put a support network in place as opposed to relying on a single stick - perhaps two very stout sticks, one on either side?

Yay, after 4 months I have some flower buds showing up :) One bloomed yesterday and since I had to bring all my plants down 'coz the dayum owner found out :\ I tried to pollinate it by hand. Let's see if it gets any tommies.

I haven't grown anything other than my mango plants, so I have no previous haunting memories : ) I shall try this year Inshallah.

...and I guess I'll have some memories from this year that will haunt for a while. Losing my mango plants, cukes ended up being Cantaloupes, gnats  Yup :) one cuke plant that I gave to my friend ended up getting some female flowers and turned out to be cantaloupes. I lost mine by moving them up on the roof and then back again in the apartment : )
