i dug a hole 5 inch deep and 12inches across and i planted the bulbs really close together, as i wanted them to grow in bunches and not single ones around the garden..
I planted them 4 inch deep and covered it with soil and gave them a good watering... and thats it !!!!

Around 7 days later... the shoots pushed there way out of the soil :)

some glads blooming and keeling over, they need to be staked with a bamboo cane or someting similiar, i have lots more that are just green at the moment, i have grown them in groups they are more visually striking to look at this way... and they make great cut flowers...

Those look rather nice! Have you figured out how to plant the dahlias yet? I grew some of those many years ago (possibly 7/8:eek:), they were BEAUTIFUL -tall, large flowers with vivid colours:sunny: They definitely need staking too.
Riz
24th August 2008, 04:24 PM

~Obsidian~
28th August 2008, 03:00 PM
Tis beautiful anyway! I grew a different kind, 'Arabian Night (http://www.gardenersworld.com/plant-detail/PL00002078/8848/dahlia)' , and I think the other ones were 'Akita' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:AKITA.jpg) and they grew soo tall, it might have had something to do with the weather back then.

wow they are beautiful..
i will be growing more dahlias for next season..

lovley and yellow , love them...
the gladiulas have slowed down because of the terrible conditions over the past few weeks..
Riz
11th September 2008, 04:30 PM
saw a gladilus in full bloom in the back of the garden, when they fully bloom they tend to swoon at an angle around 45degrees so when rain falls on it and collects on top it touches the floor, so its best to cane them up..
Riz
12th September 2008, 03:00 PM
some more that are blooming eventually... ;)

25th September 2008, 04:37 PM
Cut some gladiolus from the garden to put in a vase... make sure you cut stem at an angle so there is more surface for water to travel through the stem, i have some "cut flower" nutrients so i added a capful of it to water, will probably change water every 3 days..

A little green worm make his days in the gladiulus leaves. I have to buy something which don't affect the onions which are very close to them.
Riz
28th April 2009, 05:29 PM
some of mine in a pot, i have loads more in the ground but yet to see the stem popping out.. the gladiolus never grow upright always at a 45 degrees angle, so when it rains it gets heavy and droops to the floor in some cases touching the ground.. You can cut them for cut flowers for the vase, before the flower blooms, so it slowly blooms indoors in your vase :)
~Obsidian~
2nd May 2009, 07:20 PM
I think mine are growing...not too sure what they are though, because I sowed the dutch irises in the same place!

if you are going to use the glads as cut flowers....
Cut the spikes the night before exhibiting so the flower can absorb water and recover its vitality. Place in a deep container of water and leave overnight in a cool location. Be sure they are kept in a vertical position.
A gladiolus spike for exhibition should be just approaching its peak of perfection with the bottom floret at its best with no signs of aging. About one-third of the number of florets should be in full bloom. One-third showing color, and the top florets in bud. The spike should be straight and have an even development of florets with all of them facing the front. The spike should be cut so that the flowering portion of the spike is about twice the length of the bottom portion. An exhibition spike should have no side spikes. For greater perfection at exhibition time, the grower must remove any side spikes as soon as they are formed. http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/pubs/plantsci/landscap/h812w.htm

i leave my glads bulbs in the ground over winter, some gardners carefully dig them out and bring them indoors, but i DONT and NEVER have and mine have been coming back for over 3 seasons......
Digging, Curing and Storing Corms/bulbs
http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/pubs/plantsci/landscap/h812-4.gif
Gladiolus corms should be dug at the time of the first frost in the fall. Dig carefully to retain all cormels surrounding the corm. Shake off excess soil and sort according to variety. Cut the stems just above the corm.
Cure the corms by drying them in shallow containers in a well-ventilated, warm, frost-free area for about three weeks. You will discover that your large corms are not the ones you planted, but new ones that have developed on the top of the old ones, which are now withered and shrunken. After the corms are thoroughly dried, remove the old shriveled mother corm from below the fresh new corm. It usually snaps off easily by hand. Remove only loose husks. Leave wrapper husks intact. Also remove and label the small cormels and place in a paper bag for storage for future planting.

You have a nice flower section-i like the small red flowers behind the gladiulus too.
Riz
28th July 2009, 03:29 PM
got some yellow gladilous slowly booming too....
the red gladilous got so huge it was keeling over and touching the ground, so i cut and used it for cut flowers along with some hibiscus, opium heads, ornamental grass,
i need more flowers to make the vase look really busy and i had lighting issues indoors.. basically i could have done a better job of arranging them in the vase, maybe later on in a couple of weeks i will try again :)
