salaam...
I was walking past a house on my street and i saw this in the front garden, i asked the lady if can have it and she said of course...... :)
its an old green chest ( metal) i am going to use this as a container and maybe put some bedding plants inside it, but first i have to drill some holes inside the chest for the excess water...so it drains out

i drilled around 8 holes inside the chest....
Riz
12th February 2008, 03:36 PM
can you see the holes...
ill be getting some multi compost soil, maybe tomorrow and ill have a look at the range of bedding plants they have to offer at B&Q and i will give you an update as soon as i plant them.....

how do you assess how many drainage holes you need because to me it looks like you need more holes in that trunk/chest.
if you look below, with this bucket i drilled quite a few - 8 big ones and 8 slightly smaller ones (who said holes can't be pretty)

That is very pretty sakeena, what are you going to plant in it ?

^^ that is where the raspberry cutting is buried
the plastic containers that grapes, tomato etc come in are quite handy as seed trays or even as a plant container and they already have holes.
you can plant in almost anything from an empty baked bean can to a pair of old wellington boots, all you needs is sun, seeds, soil and water

yeah you can, i have even seen an "old bath" a friend of mine uses to grow vegatables inside it.. i think its a cool idea using containers around the house....

an update on the chest..
well i finally managed to get some soil from B&Q.. i had some iris, tulips in containers ( really root bound) and i planted lots of them into the chest and gave them a really good watering, not much to look at as yet, but inshallah when the iris bloom they will look magnificent
ps.. i was thinking of getting some "plug-ins" ( trailing lobelia) like some jewelry overflowing the treasure chest... ;)

i dug out some lupin bulbs and placed them in the treasure chest along with some iris from last season..
I bought some lobelia seeds, 2 packs
colour cascade mix
sapphire trailing
the seeds are so tiny, i scattered lots in the treasure chest and gave it a decent watering.. i hope they germinate, i sowed some in a germination tray as well and left it in a warm room :)

Riz

no they don't smell of anything.. but they look amazing, just like droplets of colours trailing down, ( usually grown in hanging baskets...

i was walking down the street and i saw this outside someone's house along with household rubbish ( so i just took it) i checked to see if there was a cobra coiled inside luckily for me it must have died a while ago :)
looks like a small laundry basket, it a cloth lining inside it so i cut that out and the plan is to grow some trailing heavily perfumed dwarf sweet pea and lots of other perennials i bought from the net last week..
I had an old clay pot that was broken so i smashed it up in small pieces to put in the bottom of the basket
Riz
11th April 2009, 05:21 PM
Now its filled with compost and i sowed some sweet pea seeds straight inside and will probably add some more seeds later on :)
Riz
18th May 2009, 04:44 PM
i have sowed lots of dwarf sweet pea and lots of other things...... and the treasure chest is blooming too :)

Looks like the Lupins have taken over, I like your creativity with your containers. I may start a garden in a small plastic kids pool! :)

the lobeila seedlings have been repotted from the seed tray into clay pots, and i am glad to say they are growing really well, they must be the smallest seeds i have ever germinated .
i also added some more tiny flower seedlings into the basket :)

Update?
Riz
12th June 2009, 03:47 PM
its all green at the moment, but really healthy and growing rapidly :)
the lupins in the treasure chest are looking great too, even though that area of the garden gets the least amount of sunshine per day....
and of course the lobeila in pots are growing too, at first i thought maybe i put too many seedlings in each pot, but i like the affect of lots of flowers growing in small pots,, seems like they will be bursting out :)

the ornamental grass came out better than i would have thought, just waiting for the dwarf sweet pea to bloom and then there will be a great contrast in the basket, they are nice trailing down the sides of the basket.
