Nothing..
leave the seeds caps alone, if you try to tug it off you will rip the first set of leaves making the seedling useless...
trust me, i have tried it...

Me and the chillies aren't doing so well, I can't keep them at the right temps without the soil going mouldy! :( The peppers on the other hand are thriving...which leaves me confused, I thought they needed similar requirements to grow? They're in the same seedling tray.

the soil is mouldy huh !?
you should move them out of the seedling tray,,,
what my guess is that the pepper seedlings are strangling the chili seedlings roots and just taking over, thus the chili seedlings are growing at a very slow rate......
seedling trays are quite shallow, so when the roots hit the bottom they spread across were there is more room....

i overwintered some chilis from last season, some just died on me because of the lack of light, and some did really well even in minimal light conditions..
when you have the chili plant in its second season you will notice the stem gets really woody like a bonsai oak tree.. the chili plant is actually a perennial plant and usually gives a better yield in its second season, those who live in climates which are fair in winter can grow them for at least 3 to 4 years before it begins to deteriorate in yields and in height....
if you look closely you can see a small flower developing :)

^ the scotch bonnets are under a 35 watt flow light for 5 hours per day
the apache F1 are natural and kept at the windosill
i wanted to show everyone how great an in-expensive tube light works for seedlings and remember its only under the light for 5 hours during the day,, so imagine if i left them on for 24/7 i have done in the past and if you check out some of the pages in the indoor section of this forum you will see how dark green and lush seedlings really get under artifical light... and they only cost pennies to run.....

trust me, i have tried it...
If you are VERY, VERY, VERY careful, you can wet your fingers in your mouth and then gently use the moisture to soften the seed coat and tease it off. Do NOT pull or tease it hard - let it get completely wet and then wait a couple of seconds, and then just tease it a little between your fingers. I've managed to slide off some seed covers this way.
However, I really would NOT recommend it unless the seed head has been stuck there for days and you can see the true leaves already starting to grow - there's too much risk of ripping off the cotyledons.

from my experience in growing chilis its not a good idea to leave them outdoors until mid may..
so just watch the night time temps and bring them indoors, otherwise all your hardwork will go to waste

get some slug and snail killer,, you will be glad you did in the long run..
i try and not use chemicals but sometimes its prudent to do so.. otherwise all your hard work of looking after your seedlings will go to waste...
some salt sprinkled around is ok, but continuous use of salt will just make the soil go really acidic in the long run

6th July 2009, 01:49 AM
the one indoors is a nice healthy looking plant...
do you leave the window open so a breeze can pollinate.. or you can just shake the plant and that helps to spread the pollen around, some growers actually hand pollinate each flower, this way you can almost get 99% of the fruit to set... just wet your index finger in some water and rub your finger inside each flower that is open and thats it !!
wetting your fingertips will help the pollen to stick to your fingertips so you can move the pollen around ;)

How do you overwinter chili plants? I've always been told they only live for one season.
Riz
25th August 2009, 03:18 PM
^ yes they only live for one season in our european climate
chilis are perennials martine.. you just have to bring them indoors and give them warmth and even reflected light and they will stay alive... they yield more in there second season too.... they even get a more woodier stem
i used to trim the rootball of the ones i over wintered but that just stunted the growth of them , so i wont be doing that, i have 2 chili pants that are 2 seasons old..

is it too early to kick 2010 off? nah (though i've been pipped at the post by K)
well as a testament to that website i linked to in the seeds topic ive got some pics to share they germinated in just over a week i'll probably keep three seedlings
Variety: fatalii
germination time: negligible, though it should have taken much longer:p
i've also got some choc habs (supposedly very hard to germinate) pop up but no leaves. planted at the same time, and i've got one naga pop up they were from a different supplier, still ebay. (this time i can question legitimacy but right now i'm just glad i got something going)
if your thinking they look leggy, your right. its because i wasnt expecting them to germinate so quick and they were left in the airing cupboard too long
with no light
Kirsten

And it's not too early to start at all :) I'm glad someone else is at work in the soil already too!

definitely a early start ed :)
you can repot the baby seedlings in the first pic.. prick them out and bury them a bit lower, and when you water just be careful you dont get any droplets on the stem as it might get mouldy
i have done this on a few occasions....
my 3 year old chili plant, it has just been neglected for the last few months, still looking good though :)

Imo you should really let that thing spread its wings this year and not prune it so much, it would look amazing, i've seen some pretty impressive chilli "trees" online.
the Fataliis have all straightened up now, the C.Habs are pretty impressive considering they are supposed to be pretty difficult to grow. And well the naga is going ok but i had to take it out of the airing cupboard which meant the remaining seeds would not of germinated but after a small rummage i found only one seed, looks like they were duds or have rotted.

I also sowed some chili seeds, still waiting for them to germinate. I am hoping they'll be reading by the time I've sorted the vegetable plot of my garden.

23cm will be very fine for the chillis and peppers!
I've seen some fruit in only 15cm pots :)
Very nice chillis here i'll get some pics of mine once i receive my light.

i have noticed though after growing chilis outdoors in pots and in the ground in UK that they are not heavily yielders... you get around a dozen chilis from each plant unless you grow indoors under a light or in a greenhouse outdoors.. and dont forget you can over winter your chili plants like i have been doing......... this way you can keep your fave strain alive for a few years to come..
let me see if i can find that website and you will see how huge and abundant the plants get given loads of heat and warmth indoors or in a greenhouse...

you're right, i've seen people's on another forum called chillisgalore (search on google :))
Also, is a greenhouse that effective?! Problem is...the cheapest one for 6ftx6ft is about £240 which is a bit expensive isn't it? Oh well, 12 chillis per plant is stilll if you have about 20 plants then you arent even going to eat that many chillis i don't think!!! Especially the ol' scotchy bonnets :D
My leafs were very curled when i checked my plants in the morning, i think i might have overnutriented/overwatered them yesterday, hopefully they will survive, the leaf curl has significantly reduced after 6 hours when i checked just now

harjun.. your handy with power tools, you can make one yourself with plastic sheeting from BnQ and it will cost a lot less, you just need some timber to make the skeleton and you can screw the plastic sheeting over it for a roof and windows and you will be loving it, or if you have a conservatory even better that's of course your parents dont object to it LOL
what kind of nutrients are you feeding them with ? whats the NPK !? you want to go easy on the nutes at this stage, wait untill they grow 3 sets of leaves then increase the dosage, not too much too fast as the chilis need time to absorb the nutes before they get hit again, the soil will get too acidic and that will stunt the growth and make the leaves yellow, So i would leave out the nutes untill they get a bit bigger :)
Riz
4th June 2010, 03:49 PM
i used these nutrients last season and the foliage was so rich and dark green it was unreal

Harjun
4th June 2010, 04:19 PM
haha, no conservatory unfortunately :)
Would plastic sheeting do the trick do you reckon?
It would be easy to make the skeleton from wood, it would probably require about £30 of wood though for it to be a strong sturdy structure with shelving in,
The plant food i use is
http://www.jdorganic.com/gardencare/liquid-plant-food/j-arthur-bower-s-tomato-plant-food.html
this is what it says on it
NPK fertiliser solution containing Mg with trace elements 4-4-8 and high potash feed with seaweed extract and magnesium.
That good? :o
I'll have to get some chilli focus
Also, the chillis all have 3 good leaves and are developing their 4th set so i thought it would be ok?
Riz
4th June 2010, 05:29 PM
yeah plastic sheeting would be awesome, use screws though so you can undo your work :)
and it will work out a lot cheaper and you can make it as big as your parents allow you too :)
3rd set of leaves then it will be ok, once they bush out a little they grow rapid :)
Harjun
4th June 2010, 05:37 PM
Wow, you have inspired me sir!
Yes I always use screws but if it's thin wood then screws cause it to crack so you have to use nails
do you have a link to this plastic sheeting?
All wood would have to be painted to stop it from rotting.

could make it but don't see the point in it really, does a greenhouse just build up heat or does it intensify the sun's rays?
Because its hot enough outside, and i can't see nearly opaque plastic sheeting intensifying sun's rays so i think they're best outside :D
Riz
9th June 2010, 01:25 PM

i really like your chillis guys!
THey truly are beautiful...love how they produce such attractive flowers but after that theres are strong chilli. Ironic :D
Heres some of my chillis, they have only been under the light for the past 1.5 weeks because weather in UK hasn't been nice (its very windy, only 19C max and 11C at night and low light levels)
They are doing really well under the light though, and i compared it to two chillis i left outside, and the ones under the light have 2-3 sets of leaves more.
They look bigger in real life :o

Alhamdullillah the scotch bonnet chilli pepper has done well after a very very slow start! It now has chillies on it (about 10?) the size of a plum or something. However they are still green, I can't remember what the label said, they have to go red or orange right before they are ready?

Masha'Allah! (I moved your post here as it didn't seem to have anything to do with the problem in the other thread).
Methinks they go orange and then red though, judging by the pictures.

I've been really pleased with my chillis this year. Two years ago I had a fantastic crop of cayenne; and this year I've had cayenne and jalapeno. Have not tried the jalapeno yet and am not sure if they stay green or change colour. Any ideas folks? I made some chilli jelly that tastes fab, but the first batch is not quite jelly-enough, and is a bit runny; and the second batch is like glue! My husband suggested I mix a pot of each in a pan and boil them up together to see if it sorts them out!
Riz
24th September 2010, 06:49 PM
jalapenos can go red too, if its still warm enough, but you can bring them inside the house were they should turn red at room temps :)

Thanks Riz. :ty:
Do they store in the same way as the cayenne chillis? I had a lovely string of these two years ago and don't know if I can do the same with the jalapenos. If not, then I'm pretty sure I can freeze them as they are. Furthermore, if I leave them in the greenhouse will they still change colour? Are they still good when green? I know when I've had them in Mexican food they have always been green, but don't know if there is a difference in the taste/heat with the different colours.
Thanks.
Riz

i think it depends on what strain of chili you are eating, so not sure if red chilli is hotter than green :)
if the green house is warmish then yes...
you can pick off the fruit of the plant and leave them in a dish indoors and they should turn red at room temps..

I was growing my chillies inside, but the plants got invested with black aphids. I had no choice but to move them outside, where they have actually grown, despite the cold weather..

Last year only one chilli grew on my plant, mind you it was only a small plant, this year I would like to have more healthier growth, what is best way to to ensure that the plants produce more chillis?
Riz
7th March 2011, 08:19 AM
chili's are pollinated by insects and wind..
did you get lots of flowers on your chili plant ? also you can give them dose of tomato nutrients once a week to to help encourage growth.
In uk outdoors coz of our mild summers you wont get huge harvest of chili's per plant i think i got a dozen chili's max on my plants.

Some chillis growing... again at my friend's house :shy: Thinking of potting this may by in Sep and bringing it inside for next season. If they leave it outside, no survival chances rite? Ofcourse, I'll have to do it 'coz he's not into all this growing but he's loving seeing all these veggies.

chillies are perennials, but obviously in the right climate, but you can bring them indoors to over winter them and just keep them at windowsills and put them out again in mid- may, the stem gets really woody in its 2nd season..
