salaam friends...

on the pack of radish seeds it says you can start sowing them in february,

this is my 3rd season of growing radish, from sowing to harvest in 4 weeks.. i made my own seeds as well just by letting the radish mature and it flowered and i had some nice pods with healthy seeds inside,

some pics of the packet of radish seeds i bought from B&Q

pics of pods with seeds inside it

i will be using an old porcelain sink i found in the back of the garden years ago, i cleaned it out and its a great container to use for growing radish, i hosed it down earlier and as you can see it has a built in drainage hole ( its a sink after all) ;)

i will be using multi purpose soil ( cheapest kind)

make sure you fill all the spaces in the sink with soil don't leave in air pockets,

Riz
2nd February 2008, 05:18 PM
make rows in the soil and sow about 1/2 inch into the soil, keep them evenly spaced out, you can always thin them out later when you see some growth thats if they are too close together and will be competing for space and the moisture in the soil...

Riz
2nd February 2008, 05:21 PM
OK that's the hard bit out of the way :)

now it needs a good watering

repeat sowing every two to three weeks ( if you wish to) to ensure continuous supply through the summer, remember it is much more economical to sow little and often rather than have a long row of radishes all coming to maturity at the same time

i bumped it because i answered your other post and it dropped from first to second, :)

em, ok

which do you think taste better the radish you've bought, grown from seeds you've bought or the seeds your collected and grown? or is there no difference?

Riz
3rd February 2008, 06:45 PM
well the seeds i bought, i planted and then saved the seeds from the same batch of seeds, and they taste identical, fresh and crunchy and really tasty....

i might get a few more diffrent types of radish seeds next week, and ill probarley start the seeds of straight away

Sakeena
12th February 2008, 01:25 AM
hi, how deep would you need the container/tray to be?

Riz
12th February 2008, 01:50 AM
around 5 to 7 inch deep down will suffice sakeena.. the sink i use is only 4inches and i get great results

Sakeena
12th February 2008, 02:11 AM
so how do you know when they are ready to be eaten? i'm going to plant some but it say on packet sow mar - sep and harvest apr - oct, i'm guessing it only takes 4 weeks ?

they will look like the radish you buy from the grocers, you will know easy

here is the latest update.. 5th march 2008

the weather was very cold for the last couple of weeks, so it took a bit longer to germinate i feel.

i guess the radish looks like a little red nose lol

yeah, radish are easy to grow and a quick harvest, you can sow the seeds every 3 to 4 weeks, get a continuous supply till September..

i thinned them out, so there is space for them to grow..

i guess i should thin mine out....i seem to have loads together

Riz
9th March 2009, 04:52 PM
i sowed my radish seeds today.. i will be sowing again in 2 weeks time so i have a perpetual harvest right till mid august :)

i am trialling 4 different strains of radish seeds... i put the seeds in some talcum powder so you can see them when i sow them in the plastic troughs... didnt really work out :)

Riz
9th March 2009, 04:56 PM
i poured the compost into the troughs , breaking up big pieces of soil which are stuck together with my hands , filling all the air pockets, fill right to the brim and water in well, i water first so when the seeds germinate the little "taproot" can sense the moisture below it and head downwards.

Riz
9th March 2009, 05:02 PM
i made three rows just using my index finger.. and then sowed each seed into the rows, at this point am not too bothered if the seeds are to close together, when the little seedlings pop out of the soil i can always thin them out, by simply just pulling them out, if they are evenly spaced you will get bigger radish as they wont be competing for space and moisture if they are really close together,, this way you will get a uniformed crop of radish which will look cool in salad bowl :)

after you have sowed them, cover with 1/4 inch soil and leave,, i have done the same thing, this time using pots.

Riz
9th March 2009, 05:09 PM
i have grown radish for 2 seasons and they don't seem to be fussy about anything... so inshallah these are zero maintenance vegetables, apart from the watering that is !!

Tania
10th March 2009, 07:34 PM
^
Have you left them outdoor or indoor?

Riz
10th March 2009, 07:48 PM
^ outdoors tania..

Riz
13th March 2009, 02:58 AM
maybe i sowed them too early.. on the back of the pack it said march onwards.. but some gardners wait till mid April... good job i have lots of seeds !! i will be sowing some all the way till august. Seeds germinate when the soil gets warmer in spring time. so they just lie dormant until the soil temperature rise :GreenThumbs:

Tania
13th March 2009, 07:46 PM
I think the same is happening with my seeds too. They didn't germinated but from tuesday the rain stops and i hope until thursday to see the first radish.

Riz
15th March 2009, 02:35 PM
bright sunny day today,, had a look at the radish and i can see some of them germinating :)

~Obsidian~

I have no idea how close mine are because they are yet to germinate, but I hope they aren't too close together because I don't want to thin them out!

Tania

I will have to thin mine but i will re-plant the seedlings, i have to be very careful at roots.

Riz
3rd April 2009, 10:32 PM
hi tania..

just sow more every 2 weeks :)

some of mine, very close together, i will thin them out later

Nife180
7th April 2009, 10:29 PM
I just bought some radish seeds, Put them in the tray to germinate them, along with watermelon and muskmelon. I would love some radish, I just love them. I'm planning to grow them in plastic troughs too. Will they germinate faster in warm weather? How fast do you expect?

~Obsidian~
8th April 2009, 10:22 AM
Yep I think they will germinate faster then. Within a week maybe? It's been a little cold outside and its taken about a week and a few days for mine to germinate here.

Nife180
10th April 2009, 09:27 AM
The seedlings have emerged :). It took 3 days for the cotyledons to appear, I'll have to prepare the troph now.

It's been raining for a while yesterday. It's 29 degree C outside :sunny:, will they bolt and produce an immature radish?

Sorry for the crappy photos :p

Riz
10th April 2009, 05:01 PM
you could have just germinated them in the trough in the first place !!?

No, they wont bolt :)

Nife180
10th April 2009, 06:33 PM
you could have just germinated them in the trough in the first place !!?

No, they wont bolt :)
I didn't because, I wanted to maintain the moisture and I like watching stuff germinate :p,

but I will germinate more in the troph, should I cover them with more soil or just leave them on the surface while germinating?

Riz
10th April 2009, 06:46 PM
cover with 1/4 inch soil and water in and you will be fine.

Riz
11th April 2009, 05:41 PM
the radish are growing well.. they dont mind the cold along with the lettuce :freezing:

~Obsidian~
11th April 2009, 11:46 PM
Mine are looking like that :D

Nife180
12th April 2009, 07:23 PM
The seeds I've put in the troph have sprouted! It took them two days, faster than the covered seed bed, It's cool and it looks like germination rate is high for radishes, most of them sprouted. And the ones that I transplanted are healthy and thriving :p

Tania
15th April 2009, 08:40 PM
The radish begin to have a red root. Because of the leaves i couldn't photo that.

Riz
28th April 2009, 05:37 PM
my radish are slowly growing too.. some of the radish are growing out of the ground, i should have buried the seed a little lower in the troughs,, they grow bigger under the ground, but sometimes if you germinate the seed to shallow they pop out of the dirt :)

~Obsidian~

Looks Awesome! :GreenThumbs:

Are you going to leave some to develop seed pods? How long does it take from this point?

i did last season, i have pics somewhere of the pods.. but its better if they cross pollinate with another strain of radish me thinks !! as the seeds have poor germnation rates..

the seeds are so cheap, its just more prudent to buy a pack rather than have the seeds, but just for the sake of knowing stuff you can try letting a few radish run to seed,, the pods if i can remember correctly wont mature till end of august early september..

My radishes are being supremely rubbish! As in, they aren't growing  just staying the same, not bulking up. And yes they've been receiving water! Probably not as regularly as they could have though, maybe thats the problem.

yeah tania.. mine are crunchy and really nice but smaller than last season, i think its because i used really really cheap compost, but i have sowed some more and this time i will sow deep because if you dont the radish pops out of the soil and grows and sometimes insects munch on the red skin leaving it exposed to the elements , so always sow deep and follow instructions on back of pack :)

rubmanhayat
19th October 2010, 02:50 PM
I keep them in my windowsill and it gets roughly about 5hrs of sunlight. I did give it some some plant food that I bought a while back for my tomatoes, which by the way I haven't got any yet  I think I'll give 'em some more.

Riz
19th October 2010, 05:40 PM
aww thats a shame.... that's why they are growing slow, you need at least 8 hours of direct sunlight.. I think you have done very well regardless.. we will have to think of something for next season for you, put our collective heads together and come up with a viable solution for you..

if you had more radish growing indoors you could have just harvested the leaves and made some great saag :)

rubmanhayat
19th October 2010, 08:37 PM
I guess sunlight is the culprit here hmmm....:) Can't get enough of it. I did manage to put my plants on the roof but owner got me there  Next season I think I'll try it again.

I believe it was august and got only 3 by end of october. I kept 'em in my window sill. It could be light issue but the leaves really grew. I am still living at the same place, this year I'll try to put everything on the roof again hoping my landlady doesn't find out. I will use the same seeds i have from last year. Tomato, cukes, cantaloupe, carrots, radish. Repot my two mexican mango plants and have another pineapple that has started rooting in water :)

2 days later

just been watering the trough once every 3 to 4 days, if it rains i dont bother watering them.... radish are fast growing within 5 to 6 weeks you can harvest them from seed.

seedlings are doing great, not added any nutrients to it, because the compost i bought already has 6 weeks of goodness inside it and it takes around 5 to 6 weeks for the radish to mature.

Mashallah Riz this is awesome. I was disappointed by my last year's experience, therefore, didn't try it this year. Looking at this I am thinking of giving it a try :)

I harvested all my radish today, i wanted to harvest them last week but my camera lead stopped working and i ordered a new one from E-bay and i am still waiting for it lol. So now i am using my mobile camera phone to take pics..

really crunchy and fresh tasting radish with a nice peppery after taste and the tops ( leaves) taste good too especially if you cut them up in a salad
