hello i was wondering if any one is growing bonsai trees, i want to give it a go I have a seedling of a tree pop up in my garden, hoping to turn it into a bonsai.
i'll upload a pic of the seedling i want to turn into a bonsai later

i've always liked these trees they look more exotic than normal trees

of course i did do some research:

bonsai seeds are a gimmick, they are just plant species which work as bonsai, seeds from an ordinary tree i.e oak, maple will do

shape and size is obtained through pruning of roots and leaves. root trimming creates the size and gives a good structure while leaf trimming gives shape.

only prune occasionally in growing season dont cut off every stray leaf and allow for good growth before pruning

these plants need seasonal climate same as any oak, or beach, etc tree so dont bring in over winter and dont give them any extra water. also they need natural light levels so keep most species outdoors year round.

One of my goals is too create a bonsai, I currently have my eyes set of a specific tree which is grown in our area it only takes 4 years to get 4-7 meters tall depending on the soil. But It's roots are a problem, they like looks of water. My dad chopped them off and burned the trunks to get rid of them.

But First I want to make a chili bonsai, there are lots of videos on youtube on the subject, I hope it goes well for you.

I have accidentally created a bonsai :p I bought a very large crassula ovata last year which had to be laid on its side to get in my car and a lot of branches broke off so as an experiment I stuck them into compost and within a month new leaves sprouted

My accidental bonsai may take 3-4 years before the branches on the new leaves get the same thickness as the old ones :)

You've done some good research Ed but it takes many years to create a good bonsai, good luck!

If the tree its not mutilated and hurt i am not against. But i don't like bonsai, always had the feeling they are some mistakes of biology (like the miniature dogs)

Bonsai's are just normal tree's which are pruned & shapped to create te illusion of a small tree. It's genetics remains the same. A bonsai is not a 'breeding' experiment or w/e :p.

I was very interested in training a bonsai tree a while back, but it's a pretty big investment of time. The results are very beautiful, but remember that trees take a VERY long time to grow, esp. from seed. If I planted a seed now, I would have to wait 3 years or so before I could begin training it.

Yes, sometimes bonsai reminds me of foot-binding and wearing corsets, but I doubt it hurts the tree. It's not torture!

I've got a plan and.... well it is a bit ambitious lets hope it doesn't turn into top gear and end up being rubbish too.

ok here it goes:

it will be a quad semi-cascade with a informal upright trunk in the middle, as far as i know it has never been tried and is more ambitious than anything that has. but then it is a japanese art so they keep it simple

i'm expecting this to take 4-6 years

Looks like a maple, Is it a rooted cutting? or seedling. I'm currently waiting for the inedible fig tree we have to finish fruiting so I can get some cuttings. Then I can begin with the bonsai.

I was wondering if someone can help me with my growing this year. Its my first time growing from seed and Im younger so its a definitely first for me.Anyway, I would want to only start a few. I would be starting them using a CFL for light along with natural light when possible. what is the time for the light? 12/12? Thanks. Any and all help would be good.

hi,

I m learning to grow bonsais from a bonsai master here in Karachi, Pakistan. He has a wonderful collection of bonsai.

So far I have learned to make forest arangements and some other styles of bonsais.

You should give it a try. But I think if you can find some one who can teach you it would be great. Or else it will take a long time to learn from the mistakes.

I will soon post how to go about it. I will leave a link here for you and anyone who is interested.
