i bought these seeds beacuse they look so cool, i grew them last season and neglected taking pics as it was growing from seed to bushy plant, black and white seeds in a pod amazing,
In america they call them "cow beans" some call them "yinyang" there isnt much info out there about them, i grew 2 plants in really bad soil and they grew around 1 foot tall
here is some info :- http://www.purcellmountainfarms.com/Ying-Yang%20Beans.htm (http://www.purcellmountainfarms.com/Ying-Yang%20Beans.htm)
what do you think cool or what ?
ill be growing them next season aswell so watch out for the grow thread
i forget to take the pic of the plant, sorry !!
you can cook them like the "kidney bean" although the black colour disappears and youre left with a white kidney bean.

they taste great they are form the pulses family ( kidney beans) in America they call it "cow bean" when you boil them or cook them the black disappear and you're left with a white bean..

They look so good and big :) You will sow them straight in the ground or in pots ?
Riz

yes tania..
straight into the ground or a pot the choice is yours.. In the ground they get a lot bigger maybe 3 feet in height and 2 feet across.. i grew them in pots and in the ground, but the ones in the ground did not get much light at all, so they were small and stunted, the ones in the pots grew really well and i harvest around a dozen pods from each plant,, i have never seen them before and when i did i just wanted to see if they would grow black and white aswell :) and they did

Riz you're going to have to guide me through growing them. When to plant indoors, pot sizes, when to plant outdoors?
And just to double check...these are leghumes too, right? So if I plant them into nutritionally poor soil they should do the whole symbiotic relationship thingy? Because I was going to plant some sweetcorn inshaAllah, and because I've heard they are quite demanding plants, I'd plant the beans alongside them to help replenish the nitrogen..

hi..
Missed this post :)
you can germinate them in mid April and put them out in mid may, they grow too around 3 feet in height and grow like a small bush with pods dangling from everywhere. but if you grow them in small pots they wont grow as tall and you will get a smaller yield ( obviously) i grew mine in pots and had around 15 pods from each small plant,, really enjoyable growing these and are always a talking to point to people who have never seen black and white beans before :)

Please don't stress on that, you will only be growing a few of them, its not as if you are growing a field full.. but its cool that you're thinking about it, just goes to show you are thinking ahead,

just for a laugh i germinated one seed in a 3 inch seedling pot, watered it and wrapped some cling film around it and left it at the windowsill,, 4 days later and almost a seedling ..
really impressed :)

Do they require full sun or will they cope in the shade?
Riz

mid may is the best time to take them outdoors permanent.. they would love full sun, but will grow in shady areas, but wont produce bigger yields .. but its all good as i had some the shade in a container and they grew really well...
some pics of seedlings that are just emerging, and one big plant that i germinated a few weeks ago

I sowed the beans today, and I've got 5 identical pots for them to go in later :D (if all 5 beans germinate that is!)
