Looking for help here....

Do you need it and if so when?

I have been mostly planting my baskets and boxes with soil from the garden.

Compost is quite heavy and I am told you can't keep it from year to year and apparently it isn't environmentally friendly either.

So when should I use it?

soil from the garden have lots of bugs in it..

you can use compost for all planting and re potting of containers into bigger containers.. I use compost for everything and on rare occasions i use soil, sometimes i mix it in with the compost..

if you use compost and soil mix ( not garden soil) your plants will love it even more that they do with the garden soil..

I used 2 bags of (80litres) compost in my veg patch and one bag of top soil and raked it all in.. i have garlic growing in it, and later on brussel sprouts and maybe onions..

you can use compost as a medium for growing almost anything....

compost is very environment friendly :)

Hi Trurel and welcome :)

Riz is right, compost is very environmentally friendly and one of the best things you can put in your garden. About keeping it from year to year - compost is full of living microbes and nutrients (which is why it's so good for your plants!) but if it dries out, then all of those beneficial microbes will die. Also, if it sits outside and gets rained on a lot, then a lot of the nutrients will drain out, etc. That's why it's best to use it as soon as you get it/make it.

It's good to add an inch of compost to your plants, or work it into the soil, but don't plant your plants in only compost - they need soil for support as well :)
