Well I was gonna make this thread a while ago, about 5 days ago when my Zucchini (Cucurbita pepo) first germinated. Someone's been lazy . Now It is unbelievable how fast this thing grows.
It seems to like the sunny hot weather. I also decided to grow it because I like the shape of the leaves, a how they grow individually on long stems, same thing with the flowers. This is a big plus for me, as the flowers are also pretty and my mom uses Zucchini daily.
I like the leaves so much. The first one has been growing away from the sun while the second one has been front with the radish, muskmelon, watermelon, with lots of sun. so you can see clearly how fast it grows. Both of them germinated at the same time.

Thank you, It's just potting soil, but the quality is good though comparing it to the last sack I bought, it was also initially moist too. O, and I'm from Bahrain.
I found an insect (Tigger spotted fly) on the Zucchini leave in the morning, so I thought no big deal, then it dissapeared but came back this afternoon, I've sprayed it with homemade pesticide. (Water, Olive oil and Dishwashing soap). When I tried it on ants they crippled and died right on spot. I sprayed it on the insect fly and It died right away.

Thanks all of you, it also seems that the leaf curled abit after the spraying, but it's all going well :). Hopefully I'll get some fresh Zucchini/Courgette after about 6 - 7 weeks (about 43 - 50 days) :D

Salam,
Welcome to the club :p, So far the leaf miner problem is controlled in at the moment....I put some lemon rinds in the pot's seems to repel the flies, I've put my mango seedling on the roof balcony for this reason. Nasty flies.
As you can see my courgette is doing great, They are fast growers mashallah. But they are using up the soil obviously. Plus I'm seeing tiny yellow spots so I'll have to fertilize. The plant in the first three images is doing great. But the second one is thin and stretchy, they are both receiving 11 hours of sunshine and being watered at the same time as all my plants. I suspect the pot size.
The leaves have changed, Instead of being more rounded, the new ones grow more spade like.

I begin to sow them but without to respect the book: the distance between 2 rows should be 70 cm, and i let only 30-40 cm. Also, i don't know how old are my seeds because if the seeds are 2 or 3 years old then the plant will have more female flowers, what it means better yield.

Well, Today I decided to repot the Zucchini, as I was noticing the leaves having yellow spots so I guessed It must be root bound and it has mineral deficiency. So I pulled out all of the dirt out of the pot. All including the rootball was intact and as I expected It was root bound. I relocated it into an old soil bag. Gave it some nutrients and It is doing great now.
I can also see that flower buds have formed in the middle of the stem, I also moved it out of the sun, it seemed to be too strong, the leaves were drooping. All is fine for now.

It looks like It's dying, The reason is Chlorosis, looks like my water is too hard, that It made the soil alkaline. So I starting to put one tbsp of apple cider vinegar, into every 5 liters of water from now on..
~Obsidian~

How did you diagnose that?
Nife180
15th May 2009, 08:23 AM
I found Images of Chrolosis due to different types of minerals. I also found out that hardwater is like adding lime everytime you water. And I know our water is alkaline. I tested samples in a lab and it's alkaline.
High pH results in Iron deficiency, I think that's what the plant has and I think it's a goner already :(
Tania
15th May 2009, 08:18 PM
May be would be better for plant to move her in the ground. In bigger surface the water will spread much quickly.

I live in a hardwater area.. and i get lime scale on the "element" in the tea kettle and my washing machine.
i usually let tap water sit for 24 hours indoors so the chlorine can evaporate when i water my indoor and outdoor plants, so far no problems..
maybe you can invest in a water butt and collect some balanced Ph rain water :)

If at first you don't succeed, try again :) Don't be disheartened, there can be many reasons for a plant's death; overwatering, fungus, insect attack, environment, etc. etc. and sometimes, a plant just wasn't meant to grow! It's a hit and miss kinda thing, it's not always the gardeners' fault so all you can do is give it another go and pray that it grows insha Allah.
Tania
17th May 2009, 08:00 PM
From the book:
-the plant needs at least 12-14 celsius degrees to survive.
-don't like to sit in the full sun(half shadows place is right for them)
-they have a very long root
-to obtain a bigger yield its better to sow the 2-3 years old seed because they produce more female flowers
-the yellow spots on the leaves could appear if the water its too cold (has less degrees than the plant which sit outside.)

I have 3 that have spruted (I planted 6 seeds) they are getting quite floppy though? Do they need support even when they are small (ie: with a bamboo stick or something?) am thinking of putting them outside this weekend...so far they have been on my kitchen window sill.

Hi, No they don't need support but I recommend transplanting the short one and sowing more.as the long ones have a lesser chance of surviving. I think they need lots of sun to not go stretchy.
Tania
18th May 2009, 07:15 PM
Do they need support even when they are small (ie: with a bamboo stick or something?) According with my book the zucchini, like the pumpkin, are growing on the land, so they not need the stick. My pumpkin will grow upto 3 meter long and the zucchini will need around 1 meter around. They don't need too much sun.
Nife180
18th May 2009, 07:38 PM
Yeah some Zucchini cultivators grow as vines. But Most don't. But Since they just germinated and are stretchy already. I recommend you sow a new batch. They will grow but collapse to the ground. On the other hand the short one will grow a thick stem that can support itself. See my 8th post, last image. That seedling was like yours it died fast.

Salaam everyone - I planted some courgette seeds two months ago and they have grown into quite large plants, but so far no veg, is anyone else growing these and if so how have you done so far?
The first 2 pics are the plant indoors and the 3rd pic is another plant i kept outdoors, both have flowered but still no veg?

I am growing but i am only at my 3th leaves.
According with a seed producer-the first flowers are male flowers."Male flowers appear on the shoot and later female flowers appear. On the secondary shoots many female flowers appears, if the main shoot is pinched".

Well, I have kind-off stopped all my growing. It was extremely hot in the past days 38-45 Degrees. It was the hottest summer over here. I had to irrigate 4 times a day even with mulch....
I'm setting up a crude greenhouse and will attempt to grow things. So I'll wait a bit till it becomes cooler, I'm growing Lettuce, Carrots, etc, When the temperature goes within the 20-37 C range. I looking at some local farms and they grow Papaya's, etc.. outside while the Veggies are in greenhouses.

I discovered the difference between flowers:
the flowers are not open but:
-the male flower its attached to a very slim stem
-before the female flower you can see a small zuchinni on the thick stem.
I will try to take a pic only i don't know if that difference will can be seen.

were do you keep the plant!?,, zukes get pollinated by insects. although the first set of flowers tend to be male and drop off.

You need to hand pollinate it.
This will help alot, just nevermind the tape.

When insects pollinate plants you don't always get what you think you'll get though. Especially if you have zucchini and pumpkins close together. Some species can cross pollinate and you may end up with a 'zumpkin'. It looks like an elongated pumpkin on the outside, but on the inside it's completely solid like a zucchini. It's a rather odd sight. It doesn't happen all that often, but it's something to consider.

I will post soon the pics taken beginning from sunday and after my observations the entire process its not related to pollination. After me the whole thing is related to the size of the plant:
I bought 2 different type of seeds:
-the first type had 0 flowers until the plant has reached 50 centimeters. At that moment the female flowers appeared and only after that were wilting were opened the male flowers. Not in the same time.!
-the other type of seeds has until now only male flowers and its growing. The size its far away from the first type.
I have to buy something to my computer and thats why i didn't post the pics but i hope to fix that soon.
I am sure Tahir when your zuchinni will be big enough you will see the female flowers too.

Yes Tania -the corgeutte is now big enough and this week I had a female flower :) so I cut the male flower off and pollinated it!

gotta be careful if you are going to leave your young seedlings outdoors in the evenings.. my courgette seedlings are looking withered because it got cold in the evenings and now i bring them indoors in the night time.. gonna wait till mid may and leave them outdoors permanently..
makes sure you harden off your plants too.. there is a sticky on this subject here is the link

They were murdered. Every single one. While I slept, they were murdered.
Went away for a long weekend last week, but befre I left I completely forgot to put out the slug pellets. I then thought it had been a really hot week so inshaAllah they would be ok...but no! It rained and rained and rained ::sky11::sky11: and by the time I arrived home it was a massacre. :sick3:

Riz, you knew about that trick with the flower:o
Nothing new.
In my garden the only "new" thing would be my dog gardening :)

sometimes bees and insects partially pollinate the female flower and not fully, and the fruit will grow around 2 inches and mould and wither away simply because it has been partially pollinated, This happens in countries with cooler temperatures, but you can help out by hand pollinating the female flower.....
Watch your zucchini closely for the maturation of its male and female flowers Male flowers usually appear first and have a thin stem. Female flowers appear later and have a small, baby zucchini developing between the base of the flower and the vine. It is important that both male and female flowers are mature and opening on their own before you attempt to pollinate them.

2 small courgettes that have gone mouldy at the edges, maybe they got partially pollinated, I use to wonder why on the back of the seed pack it said 12 or more fruit from each plant and i only got 2 or 3 at the most, I noticed though slugs and snails get inside the flower and eat it, when i was growing in the ground i saw snails inside the flower head on many occasions, now i am growing in containers and on the top of a shelf i see no snails or any slime trails, however the flowers dont fully open and they curl at the edges,
maybe its early for them to fully open, still have a few courgettes growing on the plant and they have not moulded and lots of more female flowers growing from the base of the plant so its looking healthy right now..

tania. :cigar2:
courgettes are from the marrow family so if i let it grow it will turn into a marrow...
on the back of the seed pack its recommended that you take the fruit off after it has grown over 4 inches and this will encourage more fruit to grow, i am growing in plastic troughs so space is limited, i had 4 fruit growing one the vine and 2 moulded away even after i pollinated them by hand, but the problem is that the male and female flowers open up at different times, the female opens up first and the fruit starts to grow but the male flower is still closed and the pollen is most likely still immature and not fully matured, so i spreaded it around anyway and the fruit moulded, so right now i have 3 courgettes growing on each plant and more developing but only one huge courgette has matured on each vine as we speak... and that's around 8 inches in length.
