the apple and pear tree look quite mature were they already there when you bought your house?
what do you do with the surplus of fruits? i would donate them to the local school after i've given bucket fulls to family, friends, neighbours.
you know, you could even set up a stall and sell them ;)

yes. must be at least 20 years old, i had a great plum tree as well, its branches used to snap off because of the weight of the fruit, but one season it got a disease and within a couple of months it completely died.
everyone in my area have a plum apple or pear tree in their gardens so nobody wants them, so they just fall of the tree and i pick them up when i can but the majority of them just lay on the ground and eventually start fermentation and the whole area smells like apple cider
but i do give some to friends or relatives when they come and visit from out of town,, big shame really seeing them just going to waste all over the area..

apple chutney is good - and you can always sell it for charity :)
our apples this year did not do well and the plum tree is full of black stuff so will see if it survives next year
mashallah a lovely garden - what type of pears? ours stopped growing or doing anything three years ago cos aunty decided three years ago that she wanted to move it to the middle of the garden and this year is the first time it gave lots of lovely pears

love the avatar..
if you plan everything earlier and do a little bit every other day in the garden, then you can actually enjoy your garden... to grow something from seed and keep it alive and then enjoy the bloom or the fruit is so rewarding at least that's how it makes me feel.

yes..
everyone on the street does that... the area were i live has apple/plum/peach/pear tree in almost every garden in every house, some gardens have 5 to 6 huge "crab apple" trees. so no one wants any apples, they cant get rid of there own... :)

27th August 2008, 04:28 PM
Gosh - wish I lived near you then! Mind you, I can't cope with the fruit at the moment, as we only have two rings to cook on (no proper cooker yet) so have not been able to make any chutney or jam this year. Took a bag of crab apples into work at the end of last week for a colleague to make some jelly. Hope she has managed to get something from them, as she said that she'll give me a jar in thanks.
Plaited up my onions at the weekend and am really pleased with them. Wanted to post a picture but am having heaps of trouble trying to upload. Don't know why. Will have to investigate.
Have found out why my pictures would not upload - when I rotate them, they change format. However, the programme won't let me change the format back to JPEG. So, here we have my lovely onion plait, the wrong way around because I don't know how to rate it and keep it as a JPEG!!! A work in progress.
Admin : edit:-...i managed to rotate it for you dune..

sparrows and house martins, some gold finches and yellow hammers, with sunflower seeds you attract lots of different species of them, two seasons ago i had a screen of 10 to 13 feet sunflowers ( single and multi headed) right opposite my kitchen window and in early September to mid October i would get a flock of different types of birds eating away, suspended in mid air with the beak inside the big sunflower head, you can hear them tweeting away from around 6.AM . its an awesome sight i have never managed to take a pic of them doing that though..
this year the seeds of the sunflower moulded away because of bad weather.

Honeysuckle A.K.A woodbine
Best smelling climber ever in the garden... Its right at the back of the garden next to the climber rose.. sometimes a warm breeze brings the fragrance in the kitchen and the living room.. ive had this for 3 seasons, the first 2 seasons it wasn't growing that well just over 6 feet, then i dug it out and relocated at the sunniest part of the garden which is the back and it has really taken off, its growing through a trellis... it well spread right across the back wooden panels if i let it... might take some cuttings of it....

Riz
10th January 2009, 01:27 AM
^ He-hee
No you are not losing it.. Indeed they are C.D`s (AOL) they are free in magazines
they make great scarecrows, if you hang them up on bushes and trees around your garden espically when you have sowed seeds in the ground, when the sunlight hits the CD`s beams of light go out everywhere it really scares the birds, so they don't go near the seeds i germinated in the ground and pots, and it does work i have been using them for 2 years, and sometimes beams of light come through the kitchen window and i panic !! lol.. then i remember its the CD`s
and the cd`s last for ages, they are the same ones i hung up 2 years ago..
( remember you heard it all on muslimgrower first ) :)

Tall, slender spires of pale pink flowers are produced from July to August above whorls of deep green leaves. An elegant perennial that is great for adding height to the border as the flowers are self-supporting

Brook Thistle
http://www.crocus.co.uk/plants/_/perennials/other-perennials/cirsium-rivulare-atropurpureum/classid.78110/
Spectacular, deep crimson thistles appear on erect stems in July and August above spiny, dark green leaves. This handsome, towering thistle is a valuable addition to a summer garden and looks equally at home in a wildflower meadow, beside water or in groups among other perennials. Although it will tolerate dry conditions and partial shade, it does best in a moist, sunny border.http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa300/sajid_012/thistle.jpg

my garden is looking horrendous, really overgrown and so many weeds.. so i got my strimmer ( petrol ) and firstly cut all the lanky grass at the back and then i mowed the grass.. still not looking that clever, the garden needs a good tidying up, well at least i made a start on it, couple of days ago i had a huge fire and burnt so many branches and cardboard boxes.

I completely forgot about this forum..but am back,
I was a beginner in feb time as just moved to a house from a flat with no garden, since then we have planted and grown and in some cases eaten!!
basil, carrots, radish, lettuce, spring onions, and just picked my first pumpkin! we've harvested, elderberries and made jam and used the blackberries to make sorbet.
inshaallah am gonna plant more spring onions and radish and plant some winter potatoes to help break up the ground inshaallah.
i had some beautiful lillies grown from bulbs but the boys kicked the football into my flower patch and the heads got knocked off before they bloomed..:(

8th April 2010, 07:24 PM
I had a really productive day today.. spent some time in the garden cleaning up and moving things about, i couldn't believe the amount of pots and containers i accumulated in the last few years, there was so many of them in all sizes, Then i sorted out the veg patch that was overgrown with weeds so i put my gardening gloves on and spent a good hour cleaning it all up, threw all the weeds on the fire heap i will start soon, there is nothing like a good :90 to excite you LOL. i have a path in the middle of the garden that goes from the back door to the back of the garden and i couldnt even see it, it was so overgrown, so i spent an hour strimming the grass and pulling out weeds.. Now slowly my garden is taking shape, still will do more cleaning up on the weekend, The grass is overgrown at the back of the garden too, so after the fire i will mow the grass...

Riz
14th April 2010, 02:12 PM
plants dont need much looking after, they do that all by themselves :). i use to label my pots at one time a few season ago, these days i forget what's in what pot, so its always a nice surprise for me :)
lit a fire last night, it was really windy and the fire kept changing directions, so instead of making one huge fire i added little bits to the fire to keep it small...

If not then im going to pull it out i think and plant something else
Riz
12th August 2010, 06:32 PM
salaam fozia..
usually one has to wait a few seasons to get a decent yield on the fruit tree this is because the tree spends most of its energy in developing the root ball and you only get a few apples on the tree in the first maybe 2 seasons, its best to just pick off the fruit because this causes the tree to spend all its energy on the fruit instead of root development, so next season IA it would have been established and you should get more fruit on the tree :)

21st August 2010, 06:07 PM
the apple trees?
NO, they were here when i bought the house, I think they are at least 30 years old..
but you can get the dwarf varieties of almost ever type of fruit which will yield in the first season and double the yield in the second and third seasons and they can be grown in pots too..
here is a link just for reading

This is such a classic pic Mashallah. You are growing such a vast variety and after looking at the collection of different veggies and flowers, an idea just hit my mind. Why don't you begin working on your very own Garden Encyclopedia ? Kids would love that ? Label everything from A to Z and then sow/ plant the flowers or vegetables starting from a missing Alphabet in ur garden :) Ask kids to find flowers starting from A ? Let's find vegetables starting from P ? lol I am sure you got almost every alphabet in ur garden :)
You have arranged all your pots very aesthetically and they look so pleasing to the eyes. :GreenThumbs: Mashallah such a tidy garden. Its obvious how much effort you put in to make it look like the way it is.

Mashallah trillion times Riz. I had a same look before and used to have so many flowers on a sunny day =)
I realize pruning your beloved green thing is hard for you to do, but it is for the future health of the tree! My Hibiscus was growing wild and it was hard for me to manage it and I feared that one day it would collapse . The soil around its roots was getting lose because of its weight and the bushy tree was just falling down. I once tied it along the fence on the wall but no use…… So here’s what I we did today =( I miss my flowers though.

You got so many apples mA. Here's i found some recipe / May be u want to try tht.
Golden Apples
Method:
In a pan pour orange juice, lemon juice, sugar and water.
Heat this mixture while stirring till slightly thickens.
Peel apples, let them whole and do not cut in segments.
Now in prepared juice mixture put apples and cook for 30-35 minutes.
Add cinnamon powder into this.
And serve with whipped cream.

apples on my tree :)
You are so blessed having an apple tree and mashallah with so much fruit on it. We went to buy fruit to stock some for Ramadan ul Mubarak and the prices were touching the sky. Grapes for Rs 200 per kg. .Peaches for Rs 60/- per kg… and Apples were for Rs 150 per kg too and the price varied as there were different types of apples.
I always make this health tonic for my father who is a heart patient. You all must have heard about App le Cider Vinegar and it’s endless health benefits. If not just google it. The thing I make is also recommended by different doctors especially the ones who advocate Herbal Treatments…. Hakeems.
All you need is apples , honey and garlic.
But I also added some cinnamon sticks (known for remedy for heart patients… ) some mint ( to cut down strong flavor of garlic and ginger) some cloves and lemon juice. You can make it daily or c a prepare it in bulk and preserve it in refrigerator . That’s what I did. Just reheat and sip a glass of this Apple Garlic drink daily before your breakfast. It burns your fat as well as help the clogged arteries to open iA along with other numerous health benefits. So do try it if God forbid u have a heart patient at home or ven a healthy person can always try it to kick out any possible ailment. It has magical effects :)

This is real torture. I still remember the taste of pears grown in UK. Soooooo delicious :) But here in Pakistan they are really bland. You are so lucky Mashallah to have these Home Grown Pears. I remember we used to wait for Thursday Market to buy fruit. LOL. otherwise too expensve in Tesco... and Asda and Sainsburry;s were even more expensive.
