carrots are sprouting in my garden, sowed the seeds in February

carrots are delicious, easy to grow, healthy and kids love'em.

before some one asks, no your not to late you just wont get an early crop.

mine should be harvested by July when they are most expensive in shops. I may have some trouble with heavy clay stony soil, creating forked carrots.
i'll upload pics later

Hey Riz,

Does that type grow short? What's the depth of the pot your using?

Riz
8th April 2009, 04:55 PM
its a bucket ( regular) they grow long so this is the best option, if you back to the thread on pages 1 or 2 , you will see my lasts seasons grow in the bucket.

Found it, Hmm..The type I'm growing is Autumn King 2, the site here (http://www.thompson-morgan.com/seeds1/product/344/1.html) says that the roots are about 20-30cm, do you think I could get away with a a smaller pot around 15cm in depth? or will they go all curvy.

Oh darn.. I think I pulled out my carrot seedlings today, thinking they were weeds. I planted some seeds a week ago, but didn't expect them to turn out. The soil's really bad (it's basically clay)!

Riz.. my seed packet said to plant them pretty deep. Maybe I'll try the bucket technique.

Riz
12th April 2009, 03:38 AM
^ yeah good idea.. maybe even get a bag of compost instead of using the clay soil.. even grow radish in the buckets :)

Wasn't there a thread around here about eggshells? I think you can sprinkle some crushed shells around the plant to defer the slugs..

Foz

i sowed my seeds 2 days ago! didnt sow them in the ground but in a big pot.

You're probably right, I just thought I'd start picking them when they're still tiny and thin them out that way. It may fail miserably though!

hello carrot lovers...

I am growing baby carrots, small and juicy i dont like the thick ones....

i will be thinning mine out as well, when its a sunny day :)

if you don't thin them out, you will get stunted growth and they wont grow to there full potential :)

i know it looks like something that's been dragged through a bush backwards.. :)

i am really impressed by my carrots growing in a bucket.. they came out really fresh, crunchy, juicy and extremely crunchy and not too big, i dont like the big carrots they can snap of your teeth :)

some came out really small, but the majority of them are a nice size

just charging my camera up and will take a pic of my final harvest.. greedy nephews and nieces came around and have taken 50% of my harvest :)

I'm planning on getting some carrots germinated tonight, Insha'Allah. I wanna grow them in a bucket but I haven't got any. So gonna germinate in small pots, then re-pot when I get a chance to pick up some buckets.

Riz
6th April 2010, 10:52 AM
sowed my seeds today in a bucket ( made holes first) and i am using multi purpose compost,, i am germinating the early nantes variety of carrots, like i did last summer, you get so many seeds in a pack.... :GreenThumbs:

Riz
6th April 2010, 11:02 AM
fill the bucket up with compost and crush any clump soil, fill up to round 3 inches from the brim of the bucket/container/pot, then water the container this will help settle the soil and push out any air pockets..

broadcast the seeds ( scatter) on the surface of the compost,at this point dont worry if you think you have broadcasted to many seeds, when they germinate you can always pull the ones out that are growing too close together,,

cover the seeds with another one inch of soil/compost and water in gently using a sprinkler.. leave in the sunniest spot in the garden/balcony and just wait for germination :cheerleader:

Nice carrots!

I had carrots growing in a pot for months now, lots of greenery but when I checked a couple of months ago hardly any growth! Anyway I got frustrated and just turned the whole pot upside down on my soil at the back and left it there to compost down lol.

Today my husband was gardening and by chance just brushed across the pile of soil from the carrot pot and can you believe it there were loads of baby carrots still growing there LOL I have no idea how, the green leaves were all buried at the bottom and some were growing sideways and upside down but when we sifted throuha nd took them out, perfect shaped baby carrots like your pic above! MashaAllah @ how they can survive even when we are so evil to them!:o

Riz

well you just let them grow and the flowers will show up when the flower withers away behind it will grow the next generation of seeds ... usually in mid september :)

carrots like to be grown in loamy soil, ( soft and free draining) they dont like resistance like heavy clumpy soil thats why sometimes they split at the bottom, also you can use sand in with your soil 70% soil 30% sand thats a good mix, if you're growing in the ground you have to really till the soil and make it nice and loose and get rid of stones and smash away the clumpy soil and then add some sand to it, this way you will get long slender carrots..
