AsSalaamu Alaykum

We've been toying with this idea for a while but I think it's time to implement it (albeit on a small scale). We've had a couple of members that have been here for over a year, who have hopefully learned a thing or two over their past growing seasons and can inshaAllah help any the new members with their questions.

It's in addition to the general help you get from members, if you can spot someone here who has grown before what you are growing now, you could ask them directly if you are having any difficulties (provided that they are active members).

So any willing tutors - you don't have to have been here on the website for a long time, as long as you have the growing experience or maybe you're just willing to help - post your profile here in the following format.

Username:
Past grows:
Present grows:
Speciality: (anything you feel particularly confident with)
Country:

If the tutors and tutees (?:p) could create threads for any questions asked (e.g. Kirsten>~Obsidian~ 2009 - if Kirsten was tutoring me), that'd be a bonus as we could all see the answers/give some input, because one person's question may be the same as anothers'!

I think it would be a good idea if members just let us know what country they are in, you can do this through the user CP in profile.. "location" just the country will suffice, and its good to know were all the people are posting from...this way we know what kind of climate you are in and can help accordingly.......

If anyone has any knowledge or experience of growing food plants in a dry, very hot, tropical climate (I live in Saudi Arabia!!!) I'd be SOOOOOO willing to learn from you!!!!!

I'm not really that experienced, but I'll post the following nevertheless. My experience generally involves either asking my mum how to do it or following the instructions on the seed packet :o

Username: Dhakiyya
Past grows: Basil, coreander, mint, maybe some other herbs I've forgotten about, tomatoes, cacti, I grew up watching my parents grow their own veg and occasionally helping
Present grows: nothing :( waiting for the weather to cool down a bit then going to attempt to grow tomatoes and germinate a date seed
Speciality: none really, unless you count growing herbs on the windowsill
Country: currently in Saudi (tropical desert, near an oasis but not near enough to have anything but sand in the nearby ground) - my prior experience is all in rainy Britain

^ i am sure we can all bang our heads together to help and assist you, it will be cool to see what you can grow in that climate you live in... you can even ask your questions publicly on the forum and we can all chime in with our pearls of wisdom :)

please let us know what you are thinking of growing inshallah :)

ps.. okra ( ladies fingers) and aubergines love lots of heat, so thats an idea :)

Too be honest with you though, i have only had okra and aubergines in a curry sauce with naan bread, and i have never eaten it in any other style.. do you even like them !?

Down here in the dirty South fried okra (http://seriouslygood.kdweeks.com/images/fried-okra-400.JPG) is very popular. I think it's  but everybody else loves it...

Okra and aubergines sound like a good idea :) I cook with them quite frequently too and there are loads of recipes for aubergine
