any ideas on what is the best garden tool (other than the garden fork) by which you can dig up all the dirt and let it resettle for the spring period?

^ well you have the most useful tool anyway which is the garden fork :)

A spade would be handy for moving amounts of soil around, and a garden rake would be nice ,, that's bout it really, if you're a novice and just getting into gardening and growing, you could by yourself a set of the small hand fork and hand trowel and hand shovel.. and you are ready to go !!! :)
