View Full Version : Rooting Fig?

I've got two cuttings from a fig tree that I want to root, I stuck one in water and one in compost. I don't know if this is the best way, does anyone know anything about rooting figs, what's the best way, how long will it take and are they easy or hard to get to root? And also is it better to keep them warm or cool?

im pretty sure rooting powder is the best way, but water is also very good.
I read somewhere that water with fish in it is naturally better for rooting than normal water because it has more nutrients.

Thanks Riz :)
I didn't get any root with mine, but hopefully if he just stuck it in compost it'll work anyway.
I got another cutting and did this (http://figs4fun.com/Rooting_Bag.html) to it, so at least one of them should work. Or maybe all 3 of them will! It'll be interesting to see which way is more effective :)

Update:
After reading this (http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/fig/msg0502001022716.html) thread on rooting figs I decided to try the way they recommend, so I moved the cutting from the pot of compost and buried the whole thing lying down in compost in stead. Sounds a bit weird but apparently very effective! :)

Yes, they're all doing very well! The one I buried lying down was definitely the quickest one to root, it took about a week and a half to get a big bunch of about 1" long roots, and the leaves actually started growing underground (it got some light through the side of the transparent container) so I've potted that one up and it's looking good!
I definitely recommend that way of rooting figs, and my guess is it'll work with other woody plants as well. It's brilliant:)
The other ones are a bit slow, the one in water has sprouted leaves and is just starting to show signs of little root stubs, and the one in kitchen paper and plastic bag isn't really doing much yet.
I'll get some pictures later:)

The other ones are still super slow, no proper roots yet. Here's the one that's rooted:

That looks good if a bit bitten :) I definitely want to try that 'lay down' method of rooting a plant

I've potted the one in water into compost now, it got very short little root stubs but not much seemed to be happening so I thought I would try to plant it and see how it goes. So far so good! I'll post pics tomorrow. The one in the plastic bag is seriously slow, it's obviously not dead because it's got tiny white spots for roots but I have to say I'm definitely NOT impressed with this method of rooting. It's SO slow!

The one I potted up from the water is dying, I think. I took this photo and the next day the leaf fell off. I'll leave it for a while though, as it still has the green bud and something might happen.... The other one is doing great! I've given up on the one in the plastic bag.
