View Full Version : Almonds - Has anyone grown these????

I was eating some almonds the other day and like Obsidian I had a brain wave - Can I grow these into a nice plant - of course I can, after all this is muslimgrower and I have lots knowledgeable friends to give me advice (hint hint) :D
I've had no time to research into how to grow these yet but any help would be much appreciated otherwise I will have to use the tried and tested method of soaking in water and throwing the almonds into a plastic bag wrapped in tissues - well it works for everything else :p

Just give it the standard treatment Tahir, they should germinate!! I did a quick goooogle and they seem to like warmer countries. They grow on trees, and it coud take a couple of years for a tree to mature. I shall take a proper look later on iA. Good luck! This is a grow I won't be copying, because unlike you, I am allergic!! :)

I read somewhere that growing almonds is pretty easy, that they are sort of like peaches..
One of the people on this thread (http://www.ubcbotanicalgarden.org/forums/showthread.php?t=40258) soaked the almonds overnight and let them germinate in soil. However, they don't say if the nuts were inside the shells or not.
I think that the almonds you buy at the store wouldn't do so well, though, especially if they're out of the shell. Those nuts are likely very old & dried out.

Thanks for the link Psypomp and I tried germinating a few seeds last week using this method (similar to the palms) but so far I've had half the seeds go mouldy and the other half doing nothing - but I shall NOT give up - well not until all the seeds have gone mouldy :D

Good luck! Like other grocery store produce, the almonds might just not be suitable for growing. The pictures you posted really do look beautiful, though, so I encourage you to keep trying!
I soaked some almonds overnight, but ended up eating most of them.. so much for planting!

Uh...just to remind you, you want nuts that aren't roasted.
We accidentally bought unroasted peanuts, hence I attempted to grow them

We used to feed the squirrels unroasted peanuts years and years ago and one day I went outside and realized that there were all these weird looking weeds everywhere. Pulled one up and discovered it was a peanut plant with a ton of peanuts hanging off the roots!

hey..
are you guys germinating them with the husk on ? the outer shell !!?

hey..
are you guys germinating them with the husk on ? the outer shell !!?
Nope? I can't find any with the husks/shell anywhere, thats why I just used the almond itself.
Anyway I had a look thru my Pick 'N' Mix bag of goodies yesterday evening, which I haven't checked for over a week. My Chamberonia Macrocarpa (red leafed palm) seeds still haven't germinated even thou everything I read said they are easy germinators (they've been in there for over a month now!)
A couple of date seeds had roots so they've been potted. Every almond seed looked manky and mouldy. Then the last seed I saw had a great stonking root on it which I thought was another palm but it was coming outta the corner of the seed not the side and it was much thicker than a palm root!!
Woooohhoooooo it's an almond!!! :D This has made my day cos all the others were rotting (put over a dozen in there!)
I've already potted it up and Inshallah this little seed will grow into a nice plant over the next few months!
The moral of the story is never give up cos growing new stuff is FUN especially when it goes right!

I would have never thought of that :)
cant wait to see it grow inshallah over the coming season :)
I have started of a dozen, but i only soaked them for 5 hours bearing in mind what you said about them getting mouldy... placed them in a clear plastic tupperware box on the radiator.... so we shall see :)
Riz
24th March 2009, 07:01 PM
my almonds :) in a tupperware box.. i leave them on the radiator, i covered the plastic box with some cling film, you have to keep an eye on them and "air" it meaning take the cling film of for a few hours every other day so the almonds dont mould away,, you can tell when they are starting to mould as they go frosty ( small white icicles) almost like string :) you can wipe the mould of the almond and replace it back into the box...

Salaam, I was just wondering are you guys attempting to grow these using supermarket almonds, or are these out of the hard shell. I've got thousands of almonds at home. I might try growing this the tree looks awesome with the flowers blooming. I've never seen a tree so beautiful. :D

This was posted on another forum, the person grew them from almonds with the shell partially on. They found that after soaking in water for a night, they put it in soil. They put one batch in a warm place and the other in the fridge for a while before putting it in a warm place. They found that the ones put in the fridge for a while germinated faster.
I just wanted to let you know that more of the seeds did in fact germinate after being in the fridge and also that they germinated faster.
LeonaS
Oh and I think someone mentioned earlier that the person wasn't clear if they soaked the almonds with shell on or not. From what I can gather from what they have written is that they soaked the almonds with the shell on over night.

W'laykum salaam Aamirc - I can't find any almonds with the shells on them hence I had to use the plain ones. I've only had one germinate so far but thats enough for me :)
I potted it over a week ago now and its growing very fast, looks a bit like a weed at the mo but if we remember the story about the ugly duckling and show a little patience I'm sure this will grow into a beautiful plant inshallah :D

Ok I'm soaking 20 almonds in bowl of water over night, then I'm gonna put each in different sandwich bags with wet tissues, i'll see how it goes. Did you guys physically remove the mould off the seeds when it appeared?
I'm gonna try sowing some straight into soil as well, put some in the fridge and leave some somewhere hot. Inshaallah at least one will grow roots. I'll try and give each almond a different environment and see what happens.

Yes I removed the mould and becoz I didn't check them regularly a lot went too mouldy and had to binned so make sure to check them every couple of days!
And let us know how many u end up eating after u have soaked them in water as they get twice their normal size and its too tempting :p

That is one healthy seedling, mashallah. I would love to grow one. But i'm having a hard time finding unroasted almonds, A big plus would be that they are native to the middle east so I think they will thrive if I try to grow it.

Nice seedling Tahir, I agree that it looks very much like a weed, but who cares about looks remember the story of the Ugly Duckling. I'm sure that is going to turn out to look like one of those beautiful big trees. You are so lucky to have one. I hope you get two.
You guys were right those big succulent water soaked Almonds are way too tempting, I couldn't resist myself. :p They taste sort of oily and are really soft. I don't know why people don't eat it like that normally. :D
I was just wondering was I meant to attempt to germinate the ones that floated or the ones that didn't float in the water? Most seeds you plant the seeds that sink right. I just want to make sure. Thanks.

Yes i was wondering this also and plus they are a bit softer to bite!! Don't worry about the floating seeds as when I put all my seeds into the glass they all floated  but after a few hours they sank to the bottom. I think if the seeds are really dry they will float until they absorb some water. Try germinating all of them - what have u got to lose??
Here's an update on my almond seedling - its only week 3 since I potted it up, at this rate it'll outgrow any other plants I have!!

Its not snowing but last year we did get snow in april  and yes the grimy weather is the main reason I don't leave the almond outside, especially seeing as it's the only seed to germinate and its doing really well inside.
Yes the best solution to being us guys in england is for all of us to emigrate somewhere nice, warm, sunny and excellent for growing plants - and Australia is near the top of my list, just behind Malaysia - inshallah after my mortgage is paid off in around 10-15 yrs :p

The plant is now about nearly 2ft tall and has been repotted but so far only kept indoors as its the only one of its kind in my collection!
I noticed the first leaves were rounded (see earlier posts) and now the new leaves are more sharper and angled (similarity to pommie plants??) but its not branching out yet unlike my pommie plant.

Tahir that looks great, can't believe you only decided to grow it on a whim!
wow very impressive growth rate

The first leaves are not known as dicots, a cotyledon isn't specifically the leaves, it is just a part of the embryo and is the part that may develop into the leaves. An entire plant (or species) is classified as a monocotyledon or dicotyledon (monocot or dicot abbreviated) - a monocot if there is one initial leaf, or a dicot if there are two.

put all of em on a wet paper towel, covered with clear wrap, and in the fridge

They are pretty expensive here also..if you look in the classifieds you can get a cage and a macaw together for the price of just the cage...a baby blue and gold sells for around $1300 and a cage for $1000 here..but you can find deals with both for around $1000 together...but macaws are a handful...and extremely loud and energetic..sooo its better to know someone who has it and play with theirs whenever you get a chance
