I'm thinking to nick the seeds from a pepper we already have, will they be fertile or sterile? Also, when is the best time to plant them indoors? What sized pots will I need? And how long do they take to grow?
I'll do a quick google meself later, I'm just curious!

They should be fertile.
treat them exactly as chilis.. I usually use the 1.00 pound terracotta pots you can get from B&Q, they are the perfect size.. you can start germinating them now or mid march, but you will probably leave them outdoors in maybe mid may when the chances of the frost in the evenings are less... they will flower maybe around early to mid september

actually i meant to pot them in the final container, i use the terracotta pots or pots that are similar in volume.. you will get a great looking plant in pots that big.. you can germinate the seeds in any small container or tray and then pot them on once they get a bit bigger....
i may grow just 1 or 2 "bell pepper" plants though.. grew them 2 seasons ago as well.. just got the seeds from a bell pepper i bought from the corner shop to add to a salad..

Done. Got the seeds from a red pepper, and they're now in a tray with the chilli seeds (Jamaican Hot + the other weird one).

thats a lot of bell peppers...
how will you know the difference between the bell pepper seedlings and the jamaican ones !!?

Welll, the abundant and large seeds are the capiscum, the ones above and to the left (if you rotated it 90 degrees CW) are the Jamaican ones and the ones to the top right are the ..other ones..
When I covered them I made some grooves with my finger then put some string in to separate the different types, so if any seedlings poppued up I'd know which was which.

 Thats exactly what I did and grew these last year, I just chucked the dried seeds from one Capiscum into a large pot and got only 4-5 peppers but this was becoz I planted them too late - around late august :) but they are very easy to grow!

I can't remember exactly becoz i wasn't paying attention :) (too much palm growing!) but I would say around 2 months!

Well compared to palm growing that is super-duper fast
I bought a fully grown one last year (capiscum plant) but it died, was infected :(
inshaAllah this year the home-grown ones will be healthy!

bell peppers are from the same family as the chilis T.. they probably wont set fruit until early September.. unless you have some new crazy kind of peppers :) ?

I've got two different types of pepper seedlings, one specially bought seeds (Sunnybrook bell pepper) and one supermarket sweet long pointy one. (Ramiro) I've never grown peppers before and in Norway where I'm from you can't grow them without a greenhouse. It's very exciting! I think I've got way to many plants though....
I'm wondering though about the final container, I've got some wooden wine boxes that I was going to plant stuff in, about 7"/8" deep... Will that be deep enough (they will be able to spread out sideways) or are they better off in a bucket?

the golden rule is "the bigger the container the bigger the yield" but i have grown chilis in 8 inch pots and have had fruit.. so yeah they will set fruit and the bell pepper will be a nice manageable size :)

All my hard work went to waste :violin:
Planted seeds from the peppe in my fridge. Kept them on my window sill till they germinated, watered and cared for them lovingly until they were old enough to go outside. Re-potted them in bigger pots until they have a good rooting. Then planted each one carefully by hand in the ground and cared for them for months and months until they were about a handspan high each.
Then the builders came, trod on them all and murdered them :(
