salaam fozia.

hi..

they are very attractive flowers, they attract hummingbirds but living in uk we dont have them.. my next door neighbour grew them in the front garden and everyone liked them.. i think they only flower in the second season after you sowed them though, not sure..

ws

ill have a go at growing them

where i work there is a church next to us and i always walk through the garden to get to the car park and it always looks lovely as its got roses and all sorts
also got hassled by some blackbirds there as they were protectingt their baby........i honestly thought they were goingt o attack me the noise they were making! the funny thing is i hadnt noticed the babybird ont he grass until they made the racket!! anyway am waffling now lol
the vicar there always says hello if hes working in the garden and was going to ask him for some seeds but when i was talking about it to a work colleague he said he would give me some as he has loads in his garden.

will let you know how sucessful i am lol

Cultivation informations:

The requisites for the production of a fine bloom of hollyhocks are a deep, rich, moist soil; perfect drainage, to prevent injury by winter damp; and full exposure to air and light. In places much overshadowed by trees, or where much hemmed in by walls and fences, hollyhocks do not prosper. They love sunshine and fresh air; they love good living; and in a hot, dry season may with great advantage be liberally supplied with water.

Its a wild flower, so i think will be easy to grow :)

I think you should ask your colleague. I found so many cultivation directions for the same plant that now i am confused. The differences are coming from the seed: crossings, hybrids . May be you can plant where do you want.

My plant from last year (looks tiny on the previous page!) is now huge lol! Like leaves the size of your hands mashaallah! I kind of neglected it over winter *ahem* but it kept its foliage...only problem was something munched up a lot of the leaves!! (caterpillar maybe?) anyhoo I put it in the ground today, it was already it a huge pot but even that was full of roots! I also found another wild hollyhock plant hiding behind near the fence lol! :D

I planted three hollyhocks today, but I was so busy buying plants and seeds didn't look properly but also brought mix seed packet which also includes hollyhocks; guess I'll have lots of them, Inshallah.

Thats the very first thing i started with........ Hollyhocks..... But they never showed up. I never saw its seedling even. So wasnt a success. i think the seeds were expired. But Allysums seeds were also expired when i sowed them and they did pretty well..

Allahu Akbar!! I've been trying to figure out what it was that grew this year LOL, and I think it's a hollyhock! I planted a ton of flower seeds last year that failed, so when these mysterious plants popped up this year I hadn't the foggiest clue what they were! Had a beautiful flower :D and one redundant plant (and an ex-plant that was sacrificed because I didn't have a clue what it was - I almost killed the surviving two by transplanting them while one was flowering, but they survived!) but I didn't have the stereotypical blooms, the 'bells' of the flower just hang downwards. The leaves match those in your pic though Riz! I am a confused bunny....

I think the flower is coming to an end, but now I have loooooads of seeds to harvest :D
