View Full Version : Germinating a supermarket coconut !!
Riz
17th November 2008, 06:05 PM
I couldnt find the "husked" cocunut around my area, so i bought 2 of them from the supermarket make sure they have plenty of liquid inside, you can tell by shaking it. "shake the coconuts you know you wanna"
select a spherical coconut with a large, soft germination pore (the biggest 'eye')and make sure the nut has plenty of liquid inside it . Quite often if you look at every coconut you may find one with a root but i couldnt find any with roots maybe if i went to the open market i would have had much success.

the coconut i have does not have a exocarp ( outer layer)just the mesocarp. ( fibrous husk). i have heard you get better germination with the exocarp already on it.
i left mine submerged in a bucket for 24 hours ( took me a while finding a bucket which didn't have holes drilled at the bottom by me)

I am using just regular 3rd grade soil ive had for a while, i couldn't figure out which way to place the coconut in the pot.. how do i know which pore is plugged ( eye) and which is the functional one !!!
so i placed it with one eye downwards and left it on the radiator and covered the pot with a white plastic shopping bag and this was one month ago, the ideal temps for germination is around 25 to 27c or around 80f

i made sure i didn't let the coconut dry out, the bag over it worked a treat and it was always wet inside, i was worried about it rotting away underneath but it all looks good for now
Riz

the coconut germination pic#1 is quite similiar to the "date germination" dont you think !?
Riz
17th November 2008, 06:21 PM
last week i checked the coconut and it was oozing some yellow gunge out of one of the eyes ( I am hoping its the functional pore) at first i thought it was moulding but it only seemed to ooze out of one of the pores the other 2 pores seemed fine.
Riz
17th November 2008, 06:26 PM
I thought it was best to take the bag off the pot and let it breathe for a few days, the yellow gunge dried out after a day, so now i have put the bag back over it and left it on the radiator, ill check every other day for more developments and let you know..
this is what it should look like after i have inshallah got it to germinate.. small pot huh ?!

liking the new palm section, great idea
i wanted to try a coconut when i was young but when i was checking if possible and how to, i discovered it could take 6+ months to sprout. http://www.cookycoconuts.com/Plantgrowacoconut.html
they are zone 10b if that helps you at all
http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/fruits_ornamentals_by_hardiness.htm
have you considered wipe the gunge away to see if there is something underneath

some great links.. some good stuff i didn't know
i didn't bother with the broken crockery at the bottom of the pot :)
there is nothing below the gunge, the gunge is oozing out of the "pore"
keeping the coconut in stable temps is the key i feel..

According to the site you can wait upto 9 months. But its rewarding - 3 generations tree. What you will do with the coconut in winter ? if you will plant out.

Hi tania..
I honestly don't think it will take that long to germinate, in fact i think i am already seeing developments, the pore is spongy and it looks like as if the root is trying to force itself out of the pore. Ill update later on

I want to make a small greenhouse (3 m tall) in the yard-if will not be too expensive. Also, will be warmed only by the sun, including in the winter. I begin to be interested by the coconut tree because it looks so nice with his leafs.

Riz
9th December 2008, 05:34 PM
I had a check today and there is something definitely happening behind the function pore, edibles you are right, i didn't use a toothpick but i could feel with my forefinger that the functional pore feels a lot softer than the non functional pores, it feels softer and i can push the pore in a little if i push it. so all seems to be well at THIS POINT

Things are happening to the coconut..
Today i had a closer look at the functional pore and i could see the membrane all dried up and something forcing its way through the membrane, so i peeled of the membrane and i heard a Ssssssssssst sound like air was been taken out of a bike wheel.. Air was gushing out of the coconut through the pore and now there is a hole were the functional eye was and a yellowy *stem is emerging out
edit:- ( i think its the *cotyledon )

Riz
10th December 2008, 09:53 PM
yeah so am i...
17th November, when i planted the coconut.
if you take a look at this first pic ( diagram) you will see "coconut apple " i think its that which is oozing out slowly from the pore, it looks the same colour....it must turn into a cotyledon when it meets air and light..
Riz
10th December 2008, 11:24 PM
The cotyledon goes through the mesocarp and then through the exocarp, but the coconut i planted doesnt have the outer layer ( exocarp)..
Riz
12th December 2008, 07:31 PM
As you can see the functional pore is oozing out this white fleshy substance which will inshallah turn into a stem...... it looks a mole from an angle :)

You have to be really careful about the straw fibres as they are very dry and can quickly catch fire, even if you place it near the window a beam of direct light can set it a blaze lol... unless its permanently wet and under a plastic bag, but i did not want to take that chance espically when it was under a HPS light, so i cut of all the long fibres and trimmed it right back.

Stuck it in a pot of soil, covered it with a bag and stuck it on top of the boiler....where I rediscovered my old bag of dat stones and one that I had neglected to notice had sprouted roots, and had grown a looong (curved) leaf in the confines of the bag!

I repeat Riz, I don't know what it is :o erm...and regards the mould...it's only, specifically on the pore, it's rather neat (not anywhere around the pore or the coconut or even the soil) so I think it just looks like mould but may be ok? It's very soft though, squidgy I'd say, I poked it with my finger :D I think the pore has stopped oozing juices atm but I'm not too sure, might resume it later!
I can't upload a picture at the moment, I did take one last night though just when I planted it, I'll take another one in a mo so that when I do upload them you can see the step by step development (of a cotyledon hopefully, and not just mould!)
Nah Kirsten, I were just poking through the coconuts (indoor supermarket so twas normal looking) and they didn't actually know what I had an eye out for either! Plus they weren't visibly white mouldy gross, I just saw one that looked slightly protrusive/gooey/spongy and thought why the heck not!

Riz

you need the one with plenty of liquid inside, because they will need it for nourishment.
see post 1 on first page :)
ps.. remember coconuts germinate in poor sandy soil conditions.. so buy the cheapest soil you can get.. :)

Salaam T..
the plastic bag is a humidity dome it keeps the moisture in, sometimes i do take the plastic bag off for 24 hours just to let it breathe.. Its in a warm room but not next to the radiator, when i water it i usually boil the kettle and pour really hot water over it, i got that tip from edibles ( thanks bro)

Be patient. The first time we started a coconut from seed it took 9 nine months to sprout. It is common for many palms to take many months to sprout. Don't over water as you'll rot them out.
Your coconut will first split its husk at the bottom and send down some roots. It may take several months before your coconut also splits the top of the husk pushing up its first fronds. In other words, your coconut will be growing and you won't even know it until it splits the top please take a look at this link that edibles pasted in page1, its quite interesting

I read and i have to wait. I hope to see certain results in 3-6 months not 9. I don't know why the older one, from the big pot, its not oozing like yours. Your begun to ooz after 1 month. Would be the time for mine to do the same. :o
Riz
20th February 2009, 05:00 AM
^ its possible that your coconut was from a different variety of coconut palm tree, so it might take longer to germinate..
the pore has opened up on mine but there is no more activity from the pore, but i don't know what's happening underneath the cocunut it could be sending down roots..
Riz

Riz
7th March 2009, 01:35 PM
i usually boil the kettle and pour some boiling hot water over the coconut...
the coconut is still full of fluid though, i gave the pot a gentle shake and plenty of fluid came pouring out of the hole..
Tania
7th March 2009, 02:40 PM
I never did that. I took warm, little warm water from the tap. I ckecked up the coconuts and both has water inside - i think throught the pore they are taking water from outside.
Riz
7th March 2009, 02:48 PM
^ interesting..
if you look at page 1 of this thread and take a look at the first pic, it could be that the "coconut apple" is going to push its way out of the functional pore, if you look closely you will see that the endosperm surrounds the "coconut apple"
In my pic there is a hole that goes through the endosperm ( outer white meat)
so maybe the cotyledon will grow through the hole eventually !!!

I think theses guys are based in Florida, US (based on the posts) where the climate is completely different (much warmer) to the UK and Eastern Europe so maybe it is possible to germinate in these quick timescales.
I wish I lived in a nice warm country so I could grow huge palm and coconut trees all year round :p

Personally i think its the coconut and not something i did wrong.. i inserted a pencil in the functional pore and there was no obstruction, it went right to the back of the coconut LOL..
so looks like no embryo has grown inside, but still plenty of fluid jiggling around the coconut.. ill keep it for another week and then i might saw it open just to see what was inside..
yeah it was a "hit or miss" scenario too be honest with you.. maybe it wasn't a fresh coconut when i got it , maybe i was just unlucky this time......

riz next time can i recommend you use one from a marketplace or local shop instead of supermarket, in supermarkets they have been kept cool for a long time(killing the embryo) to give them longer shelf life

Looks like there was something going on inside, see how thick the walls are. Looks like the embryo was developing.

Just wondering was there water inside when you cracked it open? an easy way to check if something is happening, is to shake the coconut gently. If there is less of a sloshing sound than there was initially, it means the embryo is developing and feeding on the coconut water.

Both had water inside. I think i will try with another one.

Its a shame but you got very far initially :) I hope your next one develops an embryo in these coming summer months.

it depends a lot on how fresh the coconut is and what method you received it, i heard that if they are refrigerated before they are sold that can decrease the embryo life considerably, but it would be more worthwhile if the coconut was bought from a market stall or a fruit market, and even more adventegous to buy a coconut with the outer husk still on.

After reading this thread i decided to try it. So hopefully it grows (fingers crossed)
They had plenty of water inside them, so i got them. I put them in a bucket of warm water and tomorrow I will plant them.
A website said to roll them and see which side they stop on and plant them halfway into the soil in that position. So i will try that and water with warm water and keep them moist.

pwr_wrx

Not the pore. Just around the cocount where it meets the soil. Thr pores r under the soil

did u use fresh soil or soil from the garden coz it maybe just a seedling that germinated from the soil
pwr_wrx
6th January 2011, 06:10 PM
I used potting soil n somr sand from the yard. I think your right. It's jus something growing. It's not from the coconut cuz it's growing in a different pot too

Riz
5th April 2011, 08:58 PM
^ hmmm
maybe try getting one from the fruit market ( if u can find one in your area) i read on line a while ago that fruit markets dont usually chill the fruit they buy ,they sell the produce the same day unlike supermarkets. so the chances of a husked coconut germinating will be better...

We get these here too but not sure if they'll germinate. According to what i read it must be ripe and/or fallen on the ground with alot of water in it.

I want to try germinate one too. I will send you one when i find it here. I'll experiment on the one you posted in the picture. We get it here for like $5.00

since its so much easier to grow seeds via paper baggie method..cant we just wrap the coconut with a moist towel and put it in a big ziplock bag or tupperwear???

I guess that'd help speed up the process. I went yesterday to a grocery store to find one with the husk but no luck. They had these small coconuts that would fit in my hand easily. I think I'll try the paper baggie method but I am worried about the mould.

Hi! I soaked my coconut a week, then planted. I took this picture a week after I planted it. One of the holes already moved away that black circle thing front of it, as you may noticed.
Since here's not much sunshine, I lamp it 8 hours a day to keep the nut and soil warm. What do you think?

hi, it's just a 20watts halogen, which is very close to the nut (about 8 cm).
It provides slightly warm (max 38degrees Celsius) temperature around it.
and yes, thats definately the functional pore I believe.

But how about you? Are you planning to plant another coconut? I've read through your experiences, hope you have some spirit left to try again.
Maybe one day one of us can successfully germinate a coconut. :)

Since I saw no process on my coconut in the soil, i removed it, and now trying to germinate it within a bag, after i covered the nut with wet towel paper. Now it's outside where is 32 degrees celsius. If im right, it will germinate in about 2 weeks from now.
By the way, I bought a coconut tree in a store for ~$12 (apprx. 1,5 meters tall), and I'm very glad with it so far.
Anyone could tell me how old it can be? Picture below:
