View Full Version : How does your garden go?

AsSalaamu Alaykum!

I keep thinking to make off-hand comments about my garden in general and can't seem to find anywhere to stick them, and I know you can't constantly comment on one type of plant so I thought it'd be good to have a thread for people to just give updates in? Or rant, whichever you want :D

Stick it in here :D

Here I go:

I'm not growing much atm, the garden is full of leaves. My indoor growing has been limited to experiments with date palms, and the pomegranates are not growing at all / possibly dying? From lack of light. Hence the not many comments/ slight absence.

This thread is a great idea and I will kick start the ranting by posting a few pics of my indoor yucca type plant which I want my fellow growers to identify becoz I have no idea of the real name - basically the label which came with the plant only has details of how to look after the little fellow but there's no name

So would like to pick everyone's green fingered brains (becoz ur all more cleverer than me :) by posting details of what it could be - can u tell I'm getting a bit lazy now the growing season is over? (photos will be on later this evening!)

http://www.spaldingbulb.co.uk/r_13285-042/Wooden-Wishing-Well-With-60-Anemones.htm

This magnificent Wooden Wishing Well made of real wood for the garden or patio. Complete with 60 anemones.anemones eh ?? ( i had to google it )

genus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genus) of about 120 species (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Species) of flowering plants in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranunculaceae) in the north and south temperate zones. They are closely related to Pasque flower (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasque_flower) (Pulsatilla) and Hepatica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hepatica) (Hepatica); some botanists include both of these genera within Anemone. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anemone

I've moved a few of the posts to the relevant thread (http://www.muslimgrower.com/discussionforum/showthread.php?t=117) and edited out some of the stuff pertaining to that thread that would no longer make sense here, hope nobody gets confused!

Please do try to keep posts in the relevant threads in the future inshaAllah

I began to clean out my garden today, it's well overdue!! We had some builders in so it became a dumping ground...it's all good though, discovered some huge empty tubs that I could use as planters!!! :D

I went to the garden today, the snow had melted away.. need to do general cleaning up, make it look a bit respectable, early march though i will start to work on my micro veg patch, add some chicken manure to it and "till" it over... ready to plant stuff..

hmm wondering if i can hijack the garden before my dad does and grow some food.. potatoes, pears, cherries etc.. we moved in a couple of months ago.. cleaned it up a lot - its quite tiny... bro may wanna set up his big trampoline if its possible in the summer which will take up all the space

I really want a fruit plant now - I've got veg, herbs and flowers, it's the next logical step :D any suggestions? I don't want standard English fruit fare, I'd like something a bit more exotic but low maintenance

Tania
30th March 2009, 07:48 PM
My garden begin slowly to germinate. After almost 1 month (7th march)in the last 5 or 6 days nothing poped up from the soil, so i got a little bit upset and blamed this outdoor gardening for being not useful at all for my vegetables. Now i begin to be more content and i realise the outdoor growing its much easier than indoor where you have to deal with pots, soil and light issues. I don't have this problems.

Obsidian why you don't try with a fig tree or a date palm ?

~Obsidian~
30th March 2009, 08:42 PM
I've got date palm seedlings already, but I don't know how long they will actually survive :o, as for fig my neighbour has one already. I want one that gives edible fruit, and date palms just won't do that here. Thanks for your suggestions though :D

Tania

My garden begin to be green. I am Sooooo delighted. Even the climbing rose begin to do something.

Obsidian-why you don't try an european fruit tree then, like: peach, cherry, pear, plum.

~Obsidian~
4th April 2009, 04:36 PM
I shall do inshaAllah

I just did looooooads, such a nice and sunny day that I sowed 8 more cuke seeds to replace the ones that I gave away! Yaay!

And I alsoooo......checked on the apple seedlings that I repotted the other day, they are doing great

Sowed some basil seeds
Sowed some coriander seeds
Sowed some more radishes
Sowed some tomato seeds
Staked up my date palm seedlings and 'repotted' them (I didn't really because I didn't wanna risk them dying on me just as spring had started! So I cut off the bottom of the bottle that they were in and added another bottle underneath - so super nifty recycling!)
Repotted my pepper seedlings into their final pots - hope they survive!
I think I've got a sunflower seedling even though the cats destroyed the patch where I sowed them! Not too sure though because I've never seen a sunflower seedling before, could be an odd weed :| but its rather a strong one so I'm still hoping!
And I dug down into the pot and saw that all of the yin-yang beans had germinated :D

My garlic seedlings are yellowing.

All in all, good day :D wonder what else I can do....

*wanders off back into the garden*
:sunny:

We are in the same boat :p-you are helped by your cat, me by my dogs. Today one of my dogs arranged the garlic cloves.

I liked what you did today. You sowed the tomato seeds out in the garden, in the ground ? or in pots to can bring them inside during the night?

:p @ the dogs!

The tomato seeds are in a seedling tray, I bring them inside during the night.

I ordered a dwarf peach tree on Saturday :D

I hope so! I didn't want standard apple/pear, was a toss-up between the plum and the peach but went for the peach in the end! I didn't want them to outgrow my whole garden or cut out any sunlight so I got a dwarf one, and the options were limited. Can't wait to pick fruit whenever that may be inshaAllah

i have been an eager beaver and started some seeds way too early like the runner beans and they are so lanky and droopy they almost touch the floor, same with the yinyang beans lol..

i just couldnt wait to get started.. so what happened to yours oby !?

well the police were called when 40 hanging baskets went missing from the street,, everyone put lots of bedding plants and fuchsia in the baskets, and someone came late at night and swiped them,, according to the police its happening everywere and the thiefs sell them at car boot sales lol...

~Obsidian~

Organised crime for hanging baskets....can't believe some people

The plants were outside and something ate them! And something snapped one of my bean plants so I'm down to two only. Grrrr....

 ^ don't lose heart just try to think of it as an example from nature of what to look out for in the future and at least now you'll be better prepared insh'Allah

I'm having a time trying to turn over the soil, it seems like 50% mud 50% stone, starting to make sense why most of the neighbours have no vegetable patches, its a pain in the back, wondering whether it might be worth hiring out a mini-tiller (if that's even possible) or just wait for a very rainy day and turning it over whilst it's wet

~Obsidian~
23rd April 2009, 01:29 PM
:D thanks

Mine used to be like that, it does get better though! Used to take me a whole day to prepare the soil but its worth it (mind you I only had a litte soil). When I first started growing I used shop bought compost and incorporated that into the soil when I planted out. On the plus side, if you've never grown anything in there then the quality of your soil shouldn't be too bad.

Your garden's one acre  I work 7 days in the summer (weekend as a gardener) and also have a large garden but don't get enough time to work on my own garden, I try and save a saturday or sunday once a month and try to keep things trimmed.

Garden power tools also help save time and petrol equipment means u can use them even if there's some rain around.

If you can post some pictures of your plants / shrubs / trees to see how badly overgrown they are please :)

YAAAY :D

After all of the losses, the setbacks, the obstacles - I finally have some good news! Managed to attack the mess in my garden, sort out the main cucumber and tomato patches, and move/arrange my herb collection (it was all on a makeshift table, managed to shift it all in the sunniest corner finally)!

I also managed to set-up the mini greenhouse to protect the seedlings (everything has been outside for a few weeks, it was all evicted from the house) and now I just want to raid my nearest wilkinson and just see what they have that I can plant right now!! I'm trying to utilise all of the space in my garden including the shady areas so I just wanna plant plant plant (am I crazy :p).

I'm not looking forward to the battle with the cats, their messes, and their general nosiness (they tip over my containers) but what can I do - three of them are mine!!

Hmm what else......

.......

I'm not getting that dwarf peach tree, turns out that the site doesn't accept my card ( its a maestro) but I don't mind.

Alsooo, finally managed to plant my pommie seeds (:o). I repotted my cupressus goldcrest (mini conifer) into a decent pot so it's presentable and I still have a huge mess to clean up.

Alhamdulillah!

Another awesome day :D I cleared up a huuuuge part of the garden and even cleared out some of the back .

I also assembled the arch I bought last year for 2 pounds from Woolworths, and it is HUGE :D so I'll be using that to support my cukes.

I also planted many random seeds that I found in the kitchen, as well as some small species of sunflower (velvet queen, sunburst, teddy bear).

Good day Alhamdulillah :D

I went to Wilkinson today.....:tree-huggin:

Bought LOADS of seeds :D I spent so long in there people thought I was crazy!! :o

I bought:

A beefsteak tomato plant
A black grape plant [Boskoop Glory]
Sunflowers [Giant Single - cuz the last lot didn't sprout, the cats got to the soil]
More cucumber seeds [marketmore 76] because I gave away the last lot and the weather got to the rest
Lavender seeds [munstead strain] because I love the smell
Hollyhock seeds [double mixed]
Antirrhinum seeds [monarch mixed] for the back
Cornflower seeds [tall mixed] for the back
Lupin seeds [russel hybrids] for the back

All of this for 8.45 (my keyboard lost its pound sign), wuhoo! They have some really decent priced seeds!

I want loads of flowers/fruit/etc this year, I want my mum to be able to really enjoy the garden.

But I shall have to run from the resulting bees

~Obsidian~
7th May 2009, 04:28 PM
Sowed tons of sunflower seeds today in pots, because the ones I sowed directly into the ground before got attacked by cats/never germinated.

Sowed two trays of antirrhinum, one of lupins, one of lavender, loads of pots of cucumber seeds aaaaand am now considering to attack the back, turn the soil and prepare it for flower seed sowings, but I'm hesitant because of the cats. Hmm...must figure out a way to protect the soil....

Am considering buying loads of 6' bamboo canes so I can make a makeshift trellis thing for the grape vine, I can't figure out whether I want the cucumbers up the arch or the grape vine.

Moved my tomatoes inside today (made some space - hoping I don't get told off!) also moved the surviving chilli plant, the two surviving pepper plants, newly sown pots of chilli seeds (from a supermarket chilli), some strange herb from the kitchen newly sown (dunno what it is or if it'll even grow), newly sown basil and Allah knows what else! The beefsteak plant came inside too, as did the grape vine, not sure whether to plant it straight out or not...

Oh and I've forgotten half of the stuff that I sowed on the weekend/which pots they were in. Gonna get a surprise when they sprout I guess.
:D

I sow today more courgettes, pumpkins, celery, fennel, thyme and flowers. I had no idea i have to wait upto 30 days until the thyme will germinate. It seems so long time to me. Tomorrow will be 1 week since i sow the maxidor beans and they still not germinated.

Things are sprouting in my indoor garden - but I didn't label them so they could be chillis or pomegranates  I'll have to wait for the leaves to develop properly. Cucumbers are sprouting now, as is the basil. The coriander is starting to look decent, and the fenugreek is shooting for the stars. The dahlias are growing well too, as are the gladioli/irises, and the sunflowers are sprouting. Took the defunct rose bushes out of the ground, I could use the space better. Waiting for a sunny day to make a bigger dent in the garden. :sunny:

^ green fingers or what !!!!? lol

OK..

I've been a bit lazy in the garden for the past few weeks, the grass is overgrown and the dandelions hog the landscape, i dug a strip of turf of today and scattered some fertilizer and then broke up all the crumbly bits and raked it all in nice, this is were the aubergines, courgettes, brussel sprouts and runner beans are eventually going to end up.. ill have to limit it to 2 plants of each, maybe ill grow some in containers just to compare.

Ive had so many lawn mowers over the past 5 years, i don't want to talk about it because it will make me cry i wasted so much money on useless crap.. :)

last time i bought a petrol lawn mower and it broke down 1 month after the guarantee ended, i thought ill repair it myself and when i saw under the carriage it said "made in china" i just knew then not to bother and i threw it in the back boot of my car and drove to the county dump and threw it out of my car...

last season i bought an electric one, its the one were the handles fold over so you can bring it indoors if you dont have a garden shed like me, yesterday i thought i have some time off work ill mow the lawn i was really in the mood for it, but the little screw that you have to screw in to straighten the handles out fell out and i couldnt find it, so for 30 minutes i was looking for the screw, without that the handle would be lob-sided,

at the end i just gave up and cursed it ,, i found the manual eventually lol and phoned them and ordered a replacement screw thingymajig.

Ah yes the wonderful world of lawnmowers :p

Firstly petrol mowers are great as there's no cables involved and they can be used on damp/wet grass but they do need to be serviced regularly.

Unfortunately a lot of mowers are now made in china, eastern europe and basically places where the labour and parts are cheap :(

This means most of the mowers don't last long and you'll have more chance of winning the lottery than finding the right part for the right mower :p

Even places like B&Q and homebase have british named mowers like mountfield made in cheap places and they keep breaking down.

My advice is do some research, look at the boxes they pile up in the store, read the info on where its made, if its the UK (briggs and stratton engined mowers) then you should be ok as parts will still be available and easy to get ahold of.

Those screws holding the handles are a pain as they come off too easily, as u found out :p but for the time being if you go to a DIY store and buy a long nut and bolt similar size to the other screw this will get around the prob until u get a replacement - also look on ebay for parts - they are usually cheap and quick delivery.

If you decide to invest in a new mower go for the bosch rotak range as they are the best mowers I have used and the screw thingys are designed not to come off even if you unscrew them all the way - quite smart!

Ooops I almost forgot, here ya go Tan, a picture of the arch (with the now bedraggled/pathetic looking greenhouse/coldframe underneath) it did look alot more impressive at first but I moved it around and kinda broke it a little :o whoops

Also under there are my dahlias, the beefsteak tom and the grape vine.

In the second picture is the corner table thing I made out of an old desk that my sister was throwing out and a spare piece of plywood, it holds most of my pots - garlic at the back, radish in the old ice cream tubs, coriander in the pots next to it, fenugreek in front of those, calendula next to the yin-yang bean plant, two tiny pots of sunflowers and some more coriander next to it. You can see a tiny bit of the leaves from my ailing apple seedling riiiiight at the bottom.

Btw, yesterday I spent nearly the whole day in the garden - did some weeding, turned the soil, planted out sunflowers and cucumbers.

The majority of my time went into turning the soil at the back, it was a long and tough process because the soil was tightly packed and hence very hard. It was also the site of our old cellar which meant I kept hitting/digging up foundation stones. It was very dry as it was in the shade of a tree and the rose bush so not much water there, tried to replace a bit of it but here's how dry the soil was - even after pouring many watering cans' worth of water in it was only moist on the surface! If you look at the soil on the extreme right and compare it to the soil on the extreme left of the picture, you'll understand what I mean. But yah, sorted that out as best I could and sowed some lupins, hollyhocks and antirrhinum seeds. The latter didn't have the option to be sowed straight outdoors but I'd already sowed some in seeds trays and had approx 1700 seeds in the packet so I just thought I'd give it a shot. Seedlings aren't expected for a couple of weeks so to deter the cats I covered it with some transparent plastic sheeting from an old delivery, weighted it down so that nothing can get under it. I made some ventilation slits with a stanley knife and just let it be...I'll air it out every few days iA, just want the seeds to stay moist, warm and in place.

After that I sowed loads of cornflower seeds, they're supposed to be fast growing and I had some space! :)

Yes I know it just looks like an old tip, but thats mild compared to the rest of the garden! Operation clean-up is seriously a mission!

Thanks Riz.

Tania why don't you try making a net or something like that? Should be alot easier.

^ D'oh!

My garden does well Alhamdulillah. I've moved almost everything into pots, which makes it easier to position them in sunlight, and to water. Plus I put the pots together so that I have more greenery :D I think it looks alot nicer! Also my dwarf pear 'lilliput' came today :D it's about half a metre tall! Came with a free hydrangea tivoli too, which'll go nicely somewhere in the garden! I'm just waiting for them to recover slightly, it's been so hot and they were packaged into a box, so they're slightly droopy. I'll then pot them on.

I made a warm bed (from manure (rabbits+chicken) and straws) for the tomato seeds:

Perhaps you could pour on a bit of hot water to help speed it up? :)

I did that but we had even -4 Celsius and the mixture remained cold. Sunday i decided to sow the seeds inside garret.
