With this thread I thought it would be a great idea for us muslimgrowers to show some gardening places of interest to our fellow growers on the site. It would be especially great for our USA growers to show a few places like this (hint hint) so get your cameras out!

My Place of interest is the Sheffield Winter Gardens, in my home city, so its only a short distance away for me to enjoy some greenery in a typical monstrous concrete carbuncle of a city! Its in the centre of sheffield right next to the town hall (a place I used to work in) and I was lucky enough to see the garden being constructed and was even involved in producing banners to advertise the hoardings whilst the construction was underway so I have soft spot for the place for several reasons!

Its basically a large tropical green house full of exotic plants most of us can't grow in our gardens becoz of the climate (if in UK). Its similar to the kew gardens in london.

There's some great examples of windmill palms, sago palms, musa basjoos, yuccas, tree ferns, bamboos, cordylines, cacti, even a travellers palm (cross between a palm and a banana).

If ur ever lucky enough to visit the cold, wet and grimy north (as it now known!) then this is one place u definately need to add to the top of your list of places to see! Its open to the public free of charge and is a great place to relax and have lunch.

Downside is that its not huge and will only take around 30 mins to see all the plants, and thats going at a slow pace!

Apologies for not having any captions for the images this was down to not having enough time (photography took me over 2 hrs!) to make notes of all the plants - but I'll hopefully sort out captions over the next few weeks!

Hope everyone likes the photos in the meantime.

Many thanks for the nice comment! And with the dark cold winter months :freezing: coming up its the perfect opportunity to get ur camera out and start taking some snaps of indoor public gardens/greenery, especially of the Kew gardens (hint) which I have never been to! :D

I would but I don't visit places like that much of my own accord. The only times I have been there was with my old school. You should go if you get a chance though, you could easily spend the whole day roaming the grounds!! They've also got an aquarium and a bridge that allows you to traverse the tops of the trees. And theres a rockery, and some lovely wildlife too!

Like this (see pic) he was roaming around the grounds freely

Although I must say the things that stay with me most vividly are the giant lilypads, you could easily stand/lie on them! (They're barricaded off though)

Yes I thought u'd like the bananas, they are pretty big, well over 12ft tall and as u said before form a large clump at the bottom.

There's even a traveller's palm in there somewhere which I am in the process of germinating without much success :(

Wisley gardens in Surrey is well worth a visit, there are lots of different gardens/plants to look at, plus some greenhouses from different climates, it's just a short drive down the motorway from where my parents live  It's pushchair friendly too  It's close to the A3 / m25 junction (if I recall right that's junction 10 of the m25 but check, cause it's a long time since I've driven in the UK (or anywhere for that matter LOL))

I was thinking, as I live in Saudi, I could build a "cold" greenhouse and grow British plants in it :D

i was reading a thread once on ummah last year about the saudi government building huge bio-domes in the desert to grow food, do you know anything about that, and how far have they got with it !!?

I dont' know about that, I have heard of a plan for a sustainable city somewhere in the gulf (not Saudi) using solar power and wind towers for keeping the buildings cool. If I ever get to build my own house in the gulf inshaAllah it will have a solar panel or two in the roof, you'd never have to buy electricity again!!

There is a lot of locally grown food that should not be possible to grow round here, like mushrooms, so there must be some kind of technology going on to make that possible!
