Introduction
Flowers are a great addition to any garden or room's decor. They add color, fragrance, and elegance in what might otherwise be dingy spaces. Nothing can offer quite as much as a great floral arrangement, especially if those flowers are roses.
Roses have always been a symbol of peace, love, friendship, and even death to all who see them. For centuries, roses have come to characterize great taste and eternity during events such as weddings, anniversaries, and birthdays. They are always the flower of choice when someone is hoping to create a bond with another.
Anyone can purchase roses in a gift shop or florist, but it takes a special person to want to grow their own roses. There are too many types of roses to list them all here,

Since roses are such a high maintenance flower, there is a great deal that you need to learn. At first glance, you may feel a bit overwhelmed by all of the things that you need to know before you can begin to plant them, but that will soon disappear after you read all of the easy-to-follow instructions in this guide.
Get ready to learn all you can about roses. This will be the best thing that you ever did for yourself and your family's garden.

Choosing the Right Rose for your Garden
There are literally hundreds of types of roses that you can grow in your garden. With such a selection to choose from, it can be extremely difficult to choose the rose that's right for you. To make this task a bit easier, I've added some crucial factors that you should consider, and some of the different types of roses to aid in your search.
Color may seem like a trivial matter, but it is usually an important factor to those who want to grow roses. Usually it is simply a matter of personal preference.
The final growth height of a rose should be considered as it would be unattractive to grow roses that are higher than the area of the garden that they grow in. Some roses can grow to be as high as 20 feet.
If you live in an area that is prone to cold winters, you would certainly want a rose that could survive during the off season.
If certain fragrances invoke an allergic reaction, you would want to plant roses that have a softer fragrance than the others.
You would certainly want to learn what the advantages and disadvantages would be if you were to choose one variery of rose over others.
You will want to consider the size of your garden space, so that you can ensure proper exposure to the air and other elements as well.
If you are hoping to make your roses into bouquets, you will want to know if they can be cut. Hybrid teas can. Some roses will fall apart at the petals if they are cut.
You should also consider what other types of flowers or plants you intend on adding to the rose's environment. You want to add plants and flowers that will not create a damaging environment to your rose's ecosystem.

Some Common Types of Roses
After you get a sense of the type of roses that you would like to plant, you will naturally want to know which type of rose's best fit your ideas for planting. There are too many to list here, but I can list some of them for you. You should consult your nearest garden center for advice on whether your choice is fitting to your garden's abilities.
Landscape roses
Landscape roses are great for the novice gardener. They are disease resistant, and require a little bit less maintenance. Hybrid teas are not good for the novice.
Climbing Roses
These roses are different from the regular roses that are planted as they are trained to grow upward like vines. Most people like to use these for trellises, or buildings. Some of them are hybrid teas, wichuraine, and large flowered climbers. They are a beautiful addition to the look of one's house.
Shrub Roses
Shrub roses like the beautiful rugosa are both long blooming, and disease resistant. These are also great for the novice planter. They are gorgeous even when they are not in bloom because the foliage is so pretty.
Old Garden Roses
These roses are not very good for those with severe allergies to strong fragrances because they have a strong fragrant odor. However, they are disease resistant and continue to bloom for months at a time.
The Modern Rose
These are very special roses because they are the result of cross breeding the hybrid tea with the polyanthus. They are also referred to as Floribunda. They are a beautiful combination of the best those two flowers have to offer. They are long blooming, fragrant, and they are great for cutting.
Miniature Roses
Miniature roses are exactly what they sound like. They have all of the fragrance and beauty of a regular rose, but they have smaller blooms. These particular roses are great for indoor planting.

I potted it (didn't want to plant it straight into the ground yet) and there are a few buds on it, can't wait to see if it thrives!

If a person were to buy those roses like MG, and plant them out now would they die overwinter? Or would they have enough time to establish themselves before winter? In this lovely london weather.

no it wouldnt die, but it wouldnt grow either, you can still plant it in the ground though, or leave it in the pot and plant it in the ground next may sometime, the choice is yours.

Would they be ok too?
Riz
21st August 2008, 08:38 PM
i would personally leave the fruit tree in the pot, it wont be growing through winter and it will be snug in the pot, its not an advantage for the fruit tree too be planted in september/october etc.. the best time to plant it in the ground is in spring. you should leave them in the pot untill then..

Most likely that will not give you a tree that will produce fruit like the fruit you ate. Most fruit trees nowadays are carefully bred for good traits (sweetness, size, insect resistant, etc) and then grafted onto a fast-growing tree. Their seeds are different due to cross pollination.
It's fun to see what seeds you can get to grow out of fruit when you're doing eating it though!
Wait I'm confused!!!!! Isn't this the rose thread?? How did it suddenly change to fruit trees, lol? :natur014:

Each rose should have a minimum of 2 strong stems or more, and we offer you the best, with a selection of 2-5 stems per bush depending on the variety.

with winter coming, make sure that you have lots of mulch. Work it into the soil around the roots and cover the bush itself with old leaves. This will eliminate the possibility of frost kill

It's not so important in moderate climates but here, it reaches -30C at night during the winter. I usually use semi composted cow dung because it makes heat over the winter and keeps the roots alive

Back in July, I found this single, withered rose bush tossed in the refuse pile at the local garden center so I took it home and nursed it back to health. Now, with the first frost of the season on the ground, it has rewarded me with a single bloom and a bud that probably won't mature before the cold kills it. Anyway, I just thought that I would share it with you all

I'm also one for fishing still-alive plants out of the refuse pile... sadly there's a greenhouse on campus and I can't help wandering near it all the time, this is how my in-dorm garden went from 2 plants to 9 in a few weeks. On top of that we have a huge gardens on campus and they often have plant sales... can't stay away from that either... well, at least the greenhouse collection is free!

Why should you prune roses? There are two reasons for pruning roses:
To take out old and diseased wood and encourage new flowering shoots to grow.
To keep the plant in a good shape with an open centre that lets in light and air.
When should you prune roses?
Prune when the plants are dormant. In mild areas you can prune in the autumn (November), but if your garden gets frosty and cold in the winter then prune in the spring (March/April) when it's a bit warmer.
What equipment do you need?
A strong pair of gloves, some sharp secateurs and sometimes a small pruning saw. You will also need some garden twine for your climbers.
How do you cut a shoot?
It's important that you cut a shoot properly. Here are the rules:
1. Always cut just above a bud. You can tell a bud on a stem. If you look on the stem you will see some lines where the leaf was joined to it. Just above the line you will see a little nobble. This is the bud which will grow into a new shoot.
2. Choose a bud that is facing outwards. This bud will grow into a shoot, so you want one that's going to grow out, not into the centre of the plant.
3. Cut at a slant, not straight across. By doing this any rain will run away from the bud, rather than drown it.
4. Make a clean cut, about 1/4 inch above the bud.
http://www.rosebuddies.com/images/beforeprun.gifhttp://www.rosebuddies.com/images/afterprun.gif
What shoots do you cut out, and how low?
This varies depending on the type of rose you are pruning.
However, there are some shoots that should always be cut out right at the start:
any shoot that's dead
any shoot that's weak and spindly
any shoot that's old and gnarled
any shoot that's growing into the middle of the bush, making it crowded
any shoot that's rubbing against another

as you can see the tip growing " side shoot". I will be cutting above that, maybe 2 inch above it, really simple.. If you have a few shooting tips really close to each other, that's cool just snip the stem like you would normally do

i saved some seeds as well from 2 seasons ago i have them in a brown envelope,
i think the seeds need "cold stratification" before they will germinate
To Stratify or Not to Stratify
Some hybridizers chill their seeds in the refrigerator for about six to ten weeks before planting, to encourage the seeds to germinate better. This is called stratification. If you keep the seeds in the refrigerator too long, they might begin sprouting before you plant them.
One way to stratify the seeds is to place the cleaned seeds on a paper towel (a heavyweight brand such as Bounty). Then moisten the paper towel with a solution of half & half purified water and peroxide (to help prevent mold). Fold the paper towel closed, encasing all the seeds in the moistened paper towel. Then place the towel full of seeds into a plastic zippered bag. Mark the seed variety and date on the outside of the plastic bag with a permanent marker, and then place the bag into the refrigerator set at about 34-38 degrees. Never freeze the seeds, and do not let them dry out. The moistened paper towel should remain moist in the closed plastic bag for many weeks.
Another way to stratify the seeds is to plant the cleaned seeds directly into a tray of potting soil (see below) and refrigerate the entire tray or pot of seeds. If refrigerating the tray for several weeks, it's best to enclose the tray in plastic to keep the soil moist.

Hmm... I wonder about the stratifying. I have a tiny fridge but there's not much room in it, and I definitely can't put them outside. However, I'm thinking of stringing up a device to hang it outside my window (I live on the second floor) where hopefully the drunk people can't get to it, and the coldness outside will do the work all by itself? I'll ask the engineering boyfriend to help!
Riz

yeah i think the cold outdoors will do the trick ( clever ideas though hanging it from the window)
I took 2 cuttings form the rose bush today ( stem with shooting tips) i will grow the cuttings on and it will be the exact duplicate of the mother plant ( rose bush) its very easy to clone a rose bush cuttings i did this 2 seasons ago and now i have a small rose bush growing.. its a great way to give gifts to friends and family.. ill take some pics and update later on...

Hehe.. i like her style :)
Kirsten, see if its possible to take some cuttings from the rose bush on campus and maybe you could grow the cuttings on... a few stems maybe 10 to 12 inches long with shooting tips and a few leaves.. you don't even have to leave the potted stem indoors, they love the cold :)

you don't have to insert the seeds into a tray and then insert the tray in the fridge ( if you don't have room), you can put the seeds in a small container or insert seeds in kitchen paper paper and roll it up ( it would be very small) just make sure the seeds dont mould up, but then again hanging them outdoors with cold fresh wind going through will make sure the seeds dont mould :)

About the stratifying: whenever I do that I just bung them in a ziploc bag and stick em in, doesn't take up much room at all

The paper towel method ALWAYS molds for me, no matter what I do :(
I did get persimmon seeds to sprout once in the fridge (put them in some dirt in a takeout container), but then they died shortly after I pulled them out.
Riz
26th November 2008, 08:34 PM
If you can get one of the small film cannisters for cameras and insert the rose seeds with grains of rice that might help it not too mould.. Too be honest with you kirsten i am not really a fan of the paper tissue method either, i have tried it on a few occasions with chili seeds and was successful, but then you have to transplant them on which disturbs them so i prefer dirt,, but i am always open to suggestions ..:o

I forgot to say that I ended up taking a takeout food container, filling it with soil, putting the seeds in there, putting the whole thing in a bag, and then putting it all into the refrigerator :) that was Nov. 29 and I'll be leaving it in there for another month and a half, at least. There's one box of strawberry seeds and one of roses. I can't wait to see what grows!

thanks for reminding me kirsten i almost forget about my seeds... when i was pruning the rose bush and climber rose i left the the stems on the floor and the next day i rememebered that i could take cuttings from the stems and grow on the cuttings indoors in a cold room ( they love the cold) this was 2 weeks ago... so i went outdoors and saw a few on the floor in the garden got two stems with "shooting tips" i dipped them in some hormone powder and left them on the windowsill in the cold room,
Today i go and check and to my amazement they are growing the shooting tips have doubled in size and a small leaf is unfolding and i didnt water them for a week :)
pics later on tonight :)

That's awesome!! We have this gorgeous, gorgeous rosebushes in front of the school and I completely forgot - I knew they'd have to be pruned so I was going to go and ask for some of the branches they lopped off, but I forgot and now they're all gone :(

the little cuttings i have taken, are looking good, i wish i cut at least a 12 inch stem instead of the 5 inch stem, they would have had more shooting tips.. they are really healthy though, i left them on the windowsill in a cold room and they have thrived...
Riz
20th December 2008, 06:46 AM
you can see the shooting tips so cut ABOVE them when pruning, if you have several tips on one stem that's even better you can still cut back and leave as many tips as you want on the stem...

how long are they supposed to take to germinate !!?
Tania
18th February 2009, 06:52 PM
I bought today a pack with orange climbing rose-they can grow upto 2m tall.I don't know what i should do with them: leave them in the pack until the soil will not be frozen or should i try to dig now a hole and plant them without to add that 10 l water. The pack its in my room
Riz
18th February 2009, 07:02 PM
you bought rose seeds ?
what does it say on the back of the pack. i think they need a period of cold weather for them to germinate.. you can sow the seeds now in small pots and leave them outside or the fridge , so the cold weather can work on the seeds !!
Found a website which may answer some questions. if you cant find the answers please post back on this thread and inshallah we will try to find the answers together :)
http://www.rdrop.com/~paul/manners_seed.html (http://www.rdrop.com/%7Epaul/manners_seed.html)
Tania
18th February 2009, 07:16 PM
Its not a seed. Are two branches with roots. On the pack says to plant them in the ground and add planty of water - 10 l. Its out of question to add now water when everything its frozen and snowing but still i could digg a hole for them. Next to my garlic cloves. Because still on the pack it says to cover the branches with soil until the cold weather will pass, so i think i could plant them out but without water.
Riz
18th February 2009, 07:35 PM
you have to give them water if you plant it in the ground Tania definitely.... but you can leave it in the pot which it came in and when the weather improves and the soil is not hard then maybe you can plant it straight into the ground :)
Tania
18th February 2009, 07:45 PM
Definitely i will not leave them thirsty. They are in a plastic bag and the roots are covered.

good luck with yours!
Tania

Pink in two colours its cute. I bought orange because grows upto 2 meter. The pink and red were for 3 meter tall bushes. I saw the roses arch and its a great option.

I had read up to three months, but I looked in there today and looks like three of them have begun to germinate, so I will be moving them to their own pots and taking them out of the refrigerator... inshallah they will continue to grow :)

Kirsten
25th February 2009, 09:08 PM
LOL!
Is it mould? :p
If mould is green and grows on a stem then probably yes :)
No it's definitely a plant, I just don't know what... the roses have all had really short stems and this little bubble-shaped thing at the base before they started opening up the leaves. This thing just grew to about an inch and a half tall and it still hasn't opened up. Plus I can see the seed coat on the top, and it doesn't look like a rose seed (which are kind of short and chubby) - it's long and kind of resembles a melon seed, but I can't imagine where on earth that might have come from since I've never grown melons
~Obsidian~

Ooh, mystery grow, can't wait to see what you finally end up with!

OMG you know what... I think it might be an apple seed. I did bury an apple core in there to compost, like a few months ago....
It started opening up a few leaves today and I thought it looked familiar but I couldn't think of what it was... now I think I know!

we had hail stones last night with gusty rain.. its looking dark and gloomy right now were i am at !!!!I hate the hail stones- can destroy in 2 minutes the entire harvest. Between 2 session of rain or snow its sunshine, like here:natur011: and the 2 leaves of rose begin to get a pink colour (from yellow) - i think she likes outside, where i planted her.
Fozia - i think you took the right decision - may be the bush its fine and the cold weather made the bush to remain without leaves

Hi daisy, you will be ok in the shade inshallah might not be as vibrant and full of flower buds like the ones in full sun, but i have 2 in a shady area and they are not as big as the other ones, but they still flower and produce huge roses.. alternativley you can grow then in a biggish container and leave it in the sunny area of the garden....

Its usual to get red strong branches if it is cut and then grows from that point? Also haven't read the whole thread (too long!) but my mum has ALWAYS used the water left over from washing meat (ie: with some blood in it) to water her roses, she says it is very good for them and the proof is in the pudding! Her rose bushes (she has many) are huge! Very strong! The fragrance is beautiful and the roses come back stronger every year! :) :)

Two of the four I bought from B&Q died, anyway to tell if they are totally dead? They just aren't growing (one stopped growing when I transplanted it and lost the leaves it had). Shall I peel back the stuff on the stem to see if it's still green or not? Any way to revive it if it is still alive-ish?
ze leetle elper
7th May 2009, 05:41 PM
Is there any moisture in the stem? Is it brown and dry? Leaves still green?
I would cut off all the visible dead bits, stick some rooting powder on the bottom of the stem, stick it in a pot and see what happens!
If it doesn't survive you can take some stems from my roses when you come round lol :p

I know the Garlic thing works, I've tried it (Apparently Garlic contains sulfur). But dilute it until It doesn't curl up the leaves. I use garlic powder which makes the solution more concentrated than cloves, I think.
Normally I use few drops of dishwashing liquid, Vegetable/Olive oil and water. The dishwashing soap breaks the aphids bodies faster which dehydrates them and the oil suffocates them. Don't spray it when the sun is intense and it will fry the leaves.

I will give up to the chemical solution and i will use the mixture between dishwash/oil and water. I liked the chemical mixture because killed fast the aphids without pain. I am not sure if the organic thing will do the same.

Even though chemicals kills aphids fast, remember that the droplets get into your soil and contaminate it and kills other insects.
With the dish washing soap/oil and water it kills after a while but it works without harm.

I mean with organic. I would rather let it die then to spray it with chemical stuff, I use Homemade stuff. It's works good on the aphids.

ive also been meaning to ask about this rose
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k90/fozpot/STA50937.jpg
the shoot on the left seems a bit random.....its grows massive each year.....i left it last year to see if it flowered or anything but no it just grows taller and taller and higher than the fence.....and considering id cut it sooooooooo many times last year shows how fast it grows.... ive never seen this before on a rose...is it normal?

I want to smell themmmm :D lovely! My neighbours have got this one rose bush in their front yard, they don't do a thing to it but because (well I'm assuming this is why, because there isn't anything else that I can see causing it) there is very strong sunlight at the front, they have a TON of blooms. It's very well established too. My other roses have faded, the yellow bush has one bud to open soon iA (if the aphids don't get to it) and the pink bush finally put out some more buds.

^ i noticed that roses need at least a season to really establish themselves and they definitely throw out a lot more flowers in the second season onwards.. on the queen elizabeth rose in the first season it only bloomed around a 6 to 7 roses and this season mashallah it has tripled in rose buds... and its getting stronger and taller every season :)
so those who planted the rose in this season please don't feel disappointed inshallah next season they will double in size :)

I will be pruning my rose climber and rose bushes in the next couple of days or maybe even later on today :)
Ive had this climber ( guinee) for over 2 seasons, the first season it gave me a round a dozen roses in the second season around 2 dozen, so i will give this climber a real good prune, this is what it looks like before the pruning...

Salam-O-Alaikum,
Got myself into roses now too : ) I had this rose stem in water when i got this for my wife on Valentine's Day :) I still have it in the a bottle of water and after month and a half we have some shoots. yay :) Now lets see how far it goes.
Riz
29th March 2010, 11:16 AM
i got my step ladder ready and a pair of clean secateurs, Going to give this rose climber a really good pruning, it has so many shooting tips.. if you have lots of shooting tips on one stem its all up to you were you want to snip the stem.. if you only have a few tips on a stem always cut above the shooting tip.
Riz
29th March 2010, 11:19 AM
i cut of the top stems at least 7 inches per stem and snipped of all the dead stems too... its looking a lot better now.. hopefully this season it will throw out plenty of flowers :)
Riz
29th March 2010, 11:23 AM
i did the same with my 3 rose bushes too........
Riz
29th March 2010, 11:25 AM
when your snipping the stem off make sure you cut the stem at a angle and not flat,as if you cut the stem flat, droplets of water can settle on top of it and in some cases can rot the stem, if you cut at an angle the droplets of water just glide off :)

Hehee oby.. its jummah :)
There are several ways to address the issue of fertilization roses. The core of the issue, simply "feed" the roses when you fertilize. Roses need nutrients to produce beautiful flowers. A plant health will be a great show of color during flowering season.Let 's on two different approaches: 1 see), we can fertilize our plants with pink synthetic fertilizers (artificial) to provide nutrients in the very first plant. O 2) can treat the soil with organic matter that provides nutrients to the plant. Both can provide nutrients to plants, but one method more effective and less expensive than composting other.Any work to some extent, but I bet that a healthy rose garden with spectacular color for years. The best way to do this is to treat the soil with nutrients and therefore producing plants happy. Often, we neglect the gardeners simply treat the soil and plants. This may work for a while, but eventually you are adding more and more synthetic fertilizers, because that depends on the roses. It may even end up with a failed installation and wondered why he did so well at first and then just him up.This is the reason that food from their land – the result will be a happy and healthy pink. There are a number of important nutrients roses: nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium. Nitrogen supports the growth and healthy green – phosphorus supports root growth and flower power – potassium generally supports the plant, roots and all. Potassium keep the plant strong, allowing it to resist disease and pests. If purchase a subscription, you'll realize the relationship of packaging of these three nutrients. This relationship helps you decide what you want to target. For example, this ratio 1:2:1 indicates that some nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium 2 parts: Part 1. Since the roots of phosphorus and increased capacity flower more fertilizers, more than nitrogen and phosphorus to the first floor potassium. When increased its support, please bonemeal in the bottom of the hole they have dug. Why? Because bone is high in phosphorus and this is what your new card should be established. Nor is it a bad idea to add a little fertilizer, but be careful not too much of any nutrient to add, since it can actually damage your plants with too much reason fertilizer. The manure often is thought to be best for your Rose is, because if they break down (decomposes) – release nutrients slowly and steadily – that synthetic fertilizers directly touched the plant, but not prolonged survival of constant slow-release fertilizer. The use of compost can maintain the health of soil and fertilizer costs to minimum. You can use artificial fertilizers in conjunction with the compost too. If you think your card needs a little extra "something" can be a minimal amount of store-bought fertilizer from time to time. I doubt you should address this – but only if no – you can buy fertilizers at your local garden center. In nature, the soil is healthier when left alone. However, overuse of land may be barren, and therefore have to intervene to help occasionally, providing fertilizer for our plants at regular intervals. And then let the natural materials that decompose organic, the soil with the right balance of nutrients that work together with all other organisms in the soil. This will be your rose a healthy environment, that many flowers to promote for years and years.
