I know u guys are going to hate me :stormy: but I think squirrels are cute, I say that maybe becoz I don't get any in my garden :) They sure would help get rid of some of these apples!!

Hahaha no, I just think you've just still got an innocent view of them! When it comes to end of summer/autumn they need to bury their food to survive and I've discovered this year that they literally do it everywhere, even the smallest of my pots!! So far they've completely dug up my olive tree and left it hanging upside-down outside of the pots, clinging on for dear life by its roots; stolen a mango seed straight out of the pot (and left a little hole where it had previously been residing) they've totally destroyed my peanut plants, my apple and pomegranate seedlings and dug up my potatoes!!!
Now imagine that you've just spent ages getting a date seed to germinate, and have put your pot with it's 'blade of grass' outdoors for some sun, and then come home to find that theres soil all over the floor...and bits of the grass blade and roots...and then your getting a taste of the way I'm feeling.

I have this strange feeling u have some resentment towards these guys?? :)
I used to have one in my previous garden and it loved the chestnut tree next to the kitchen window (hence why I didn't chop it down!) and buried the nuts everywhere but he never damaged any of my plants - maybe he didn't like dates :(
I mean look at this guy I've attached, surely if u left ur squirrels a few ice pops they'd leave ur plants well alone :p
There's got be a humane squirrel deterent of some sort - like the one I use for the neighbours cats!

Hehe it does seem like that doesn't it? :) Nah I don't normally mind the little fellas, I'm just a bit annoyed about losing all of that stuff :( otherwise I used to love seeing them run around and used to give them monkey nuts like that person is giving them an ice-cream cone.
Ice-creams? If I gave them those they'd prolly start to sneeze and I'd be blamed for an epidemic! I refuse to budge from under this raincloud!:rain-053: :p

yeah i must admit if i had lost as many plants/veg as u have I'd be pretty annoyed too!
Check this site to see if there's anything that might stop them:

I used lion dung pellets to stop the cats from making a mess in my garden and seems to work - not sure if that applies to squirrels though! :)

I've not seen a cat in months! The pellets have a really powerful smell, i can't imagine how bad real lion dung is compared to that!

I used to have a pet squirrel when I was a kid. I found two of them as babies that were almost starved to death(my guess, their mother had died) One didn't make it but Rocky was a super cool pet.
I also had a brown bat when I was a kid...I wasn't normal...what can I say :p

What can I say...I grew up on a farm. I had all kinds of unique pets from raccoons to mice and that doesn't include the lizards

That's my problem too... it makes me ARSHDFJHSDJFHJD to be chasing them off 24/7 but I couldn't bear to hurt them, they're too cute and too sweet - I had one as a pet when I was little (and another one only a few years ago too.) They were appropriately named Greedy and Nut.

hey...the fact that I had one as a pet didn't stop me from going squirrell hunting in North Carolina...their actually pretty tasty :D...of course now that I'm a muslim, squirrells aren't halal :D

Son of a gun T, I'm glad you were limited on that! You remind me of janitor from Scrubs...with his stuffed squirrel army!!
They've pretty much disappeared from the area now, hibernating probably!

We've still got tons and tons of them here! For the moment I don't mind since I don't have any tomatoes outside (i.e. they ate them all already.... grr) and I can't help thinking they're extremely cute.
The ones back at home are enormously, horrendously fat, though, compared to the ones at school, who are so skinny that I feel sorry for them. I think 3 school squirrels = size of one home squirrel sounds about right.
~Obsidian~
10th October 2008, 05:14 PM
LOL...you sure they aren't a different breed? I spotted two today actually, hafta take back my words. We have super fat ones here, they're kinda cute when they arent ruining the plants
Kirsten
10th October 2008, 05:16 PM
Actually you know, come to think of it, I've never thought about there being different breeds of squirrels. It's really just been the tomato stealers and the good squirrels. Though the two (school and home) do look the same, it's just that you take the school ones and kinda stretch them out horizontally...

In north america there are several breeds of squirrels. The squirrels here in BC look more like chipmunks then they do the eastern grey squirrels that I grew up with.
Obsidian, when I was stationed in NC, what can I say...I fell in with a bunch of rednecks and started following their ways but I'm much better now...now I only shoot bambis and bullwinkles :D Oh yeah...and the odd elk :D

are squirrels halal !?
They are almost certainly haram :) mainly becoz they are too cute!! But the proper religious reasoning can be found from this link:
http://qa.sunnipath.com/issue_view.asp?HD=1&ID=3893&CATE=107
Its a bit long winded but hey u did ask the question - to save time reading all of it go to point no.5 and the lists at the end.
So no more eating squirrels!
Riz
13th November 2008, 04:55 PM
lol thanks T
even if it was halal i wouldn't eat it..
they are cute but not when they dig up your bulbs and run away with them... tis a different story then, ask kirsten she will tell ya all about her missing tomatoes !! :)
Kirsten
13th November 2008, 06:09 PM
Heh. I planted 8 or 9 plants this year and got a grand total of 0 tomatoes. (Actually I think we got one really really early in the season, picked it fairly green to keep it from the blasted squirrels...)
Chili sauce, barbed wire, netting, you name it, none of it worked... they aren't scared of people at all, and on top of that they're HUGE... I hope they get acid reflux disease from all the green tomatoes they ate
Actually you know, as much as I hate squirrels and other animals for stealing from my garden, I can't hate them nearly as much as PEOPLE who steal from other people's gardens. In the end the animals don't know any better and they're just trying to find food and stay alive... people, however, who actively steal from gardens (I haven't had this happen to me fortunately, but I've heard from a lot of people who have) are just disgusting.

Do u mean people steal veg and fruit from people's gardens??? This is really bad, we have places called supermarkets and things are not too expensive - or best to grow their own stuff - why steal??
Kirsten

Because it's free, and because it's healthier, I guess. (Food prices skyrocketed here last summer - it was really getting ridiculously expensive to buy fruits and vegetables, and so many people resorted to growing their own. I read a report that it was the first time since the 1950's that the sale of vegetable seeds was bigger than the sale of flower seeds.)
I heard one horrible story about a mother who was lifting her kid over a fence and directing him as to what fruits and vegetables to steal. What kind of a lesson does that teach your kid??? Fortunately I haven't had to deal with anything like that...
Riz
14th November 2008, 05:46 PM
yes its all true...
In the summer there was case of some people climbing over a fence in the middle of the night into other peoples gardens and digging up flower bulbs and taking them even small plants.. another newspaper i was reading said that lots of farms have had there vegetables yanked out of the ground in the middle of the night just before the harvest. Food/vegetables prices have sky-rocketed in uk as well.

They don't bother me so much now, it's when they're burying their nuts that they dig up everything!! If they mess with my seedlings though..we're going to have a problem..
