View Full Version : Growing a fig tree

I'm quite interested in growing a fig tree, my neighbour has one and it has beautiful woody branches and lovely leaves. I've got a fig from her tree, and I was thinking to grow a tree from one of the seeds but with all this grafting business (and a quick google :p) I don't think that's going to be a reliable idea. Until I buy one or at least figure out a way to get a fertile seed, is anybody else growing one of these? They seem to be ideal to grow because they give fruit at quite a small size - if they grow too big there is the possibility of them not fruiting, so I think they'd be ideal to plant in large pots.

I kept the seeds in water for aaages, not sure they're viable anymore but heck, yesterday I scattered them onto some compost in a pot and covered it with cling-film. I hope something attempts to grow!

Hi, wasn't sure what a fig tree looked like so googled it. It has quite an impressive architecture and is very interesting to look at. How big is your neighbors?

I'd say at a guess, it's around 5 - 7 metres high? Has some beautiful leaves! I don't think the seeds I planted will be fertile, although apparently some black figs that can be bought from stores have a better chance of being fertile.

I guess I got a good deal Obsidian. It is getting bigger and bigger. I think this italian fig is insane. Every where I look on forums and such people say that these fig trees don't like wet roots. It seems that if I don't drown it with water every 2 days it starts to droop. When it does droop I let it have about 2-3 cups of water and within fifteen minutes or so the leaves straighten out and it gets strong again. Very touchy feely tree. I'll try and post a new pic of this one too. I am sort of upset there are no figs appearing though. I wonder when they will come.... Bye.

beautiful looking plants dyl..

its only early July so things might start happening in late august :) you may get some figs but the main crop will be probably in the second season and onwards..

Too be honest with you, i have never eaten a fig fruit, i had a biscuit once that contained fig and i really thought it was horrible and i spat it out :)

Haha, moody plant :p I wouldn't normally expect fruit the first season on a fruit tree unless otherwise stated, they usually need time to establish themselves. My neighbour's one has fruited already, tbh I've never seen her get two crops/cut one crop off to allow the other to develop, but I may have missed seeing her do it, no idea! I'm not expecting fruit for ages yet.

Ah Figs, always hated them or I thought so. I never tried a fresh one until today. My Grandma gave me some and I tried. There was no bitter taste unlike the dried ones.

On the other hand, we have an inedible fig in our yard, it's big. about 15 meters in height & a trunk circumference of 1 meter.

Here's a photo of a branch I snapped of with some ripe figs. They are falling on the ground! too bad It's not the common fig (Ficus Carica).

Woah that is one MASSIVE tree! It's not as pretty as the common one though, and it's a shame about the figs being inedible! Are you looking to buy an edible one at some point?

Masha'Allah br. Ayyubaddeen and Mim! Your figgy trees look lovely and healthy masha'Allah - Mim if you haven't already found the info in this thread (I haven't looked through it yet) I'll post something for the care of fig trees at some point next week insha'Allah, apologies for not seeing the post earlier.

Ayyub - You have some huge leaves on that tree! Mine aren't half as big!

I have a fig growing on my tree!!!!!

How do I take care of it? Is it of the crop that won't mature? How do I bulk it up, the little thing, and how do I know when it's ripe?

That made my day :D

Shukron, your fig will grow but it depends on several things.
Your location
location you place your fig(full sun, shaded sun, full shade)
The type of soil(I am using miracle grow garden soil for inground gardens with slow release fertilizer mixed in already. I have my Fig in a pot but the soil is good so far. It holds the water very long.
My fig's leave were drooping at first but after I transfer to a bigger pot with the new miracle grow soil and put it in shaded sun( as long as the temp is warm it should be ok as far as I am concerned.) Now the leaves are standing up better and also 2 baby figs are just starting, you can see them in this new pic at the base of the leaves at the left and right sides(You may not be able to see them in this picture. Look at the difference in just these small adjustments in only 3 days time.

My uncle has 6 or 7 trees in his back garden all about 6-7 ft high, they are all cutting from the first tree, last time I was around he showed me how he did it using a empty coke bottle,I will try and get some pics of them next time I go around.

Good luck with your fig tree. We have had one in the garden for about two years now and, although the figs grow on it, they all drop off before getting to a good size or even riperning. No idea what we are doing wrong, but it is very frustrating.
