Frequently asked questions.

Do they grow in UK? Without a doubt they grow, and some bamboos reach 15 to 18 feet in height with culm circumferences of just over 3 inches.

Do they take a lot of looking after? Difficult question to answer. Some bamboo growers endlessly water them, feed them, talk and sing to them etc. I'm afraid all I do is give them plenty of water for the first year and then ......... I ignore them. They thrive on it. No doubt if I were in the mood to look after them a little better, they'd grow a lot bigger and better. But then I'm just bone idle as a gardener, so planting bamboo is just perfect for someone like me!

Are bamboo plants expensive to buy? Depends where you obtain them from and how big a plant you want to pay for. Bamboo is now becoming such a popular and unusual plant for the garden that many of the "upmarket" UK garden centres seem to just think of a figure, triple it, add a bit extra - I've seen some plants of reasonable size being sold for almost £200 ..... and this price is even for fairly common varieties. Even some of the "cheaper" garden centers are asking up to £100 for one plant. There are however much cheaper sources! The cheapest source of the lot is to grow them from seed. Unfortunately bamboo seed is fairly difficult to obtain .... many bamboos only flower and produce seed every few decades. There is one source of seed in the UK and that is to join the The Bamboo Society (http://www.d.lane.btinternet.co.uk/www.bamboo-society.org.uk) which run's a sort of seed exchange programme for members. Apart from seed and garden centres, the other alternative is to purchase fairly small plants from a specialist bamboo nursery where you can expect to pay in the region of £22 to £45 per plant. These "smaller" plants will not remain small for long and something which arrives by post on your doorstop about 2 foot high can reach over 8 foot by it's third year.

How tall do bamboos grow? This is a bit like asking how long is a piece of string. It all depends. It depends on the normal growing height of the variety being planted, some bamboos are only small, some are huge. It depends on how much watering and feeding you are willing to do.

i bought some bamboo seeds from e-bay 2 season ago

here is a pic.. this variety is called "phyllostachys pubescens" also known as "moso" these are runner bamboo as opposed to the "clumping variety" i payed £2.50 for 30 bamboo seeds.

it says on the pack it takes 20 to 30 days to germinate indoors,( mine germinated in 9 days) but i started all of them in a pot outdoors and out of the 30 only 2 germinated.. so i grew it on in a container, i even left it oudoors during the winter and it grew back, this is the 2nd season of the moso bamboo in a container and i am very happy with it. The moso can grow upto 60 to 80 feet in the right conditions and it spreads about 5 feet radius eventually as this is the "runner variety"

i planted 2 black bamboo plants aswell ( 1 foot plants) the first season they were a bit slow to grow (last pic) but the 2nd season mashallah they taken of really well both specimans have. I see new rhizomes shooting from the ground almost every other day, this is the clumping variety as you can se the rhizomes grow not far from the main roots.

I have one of those little bamboo plants that grow in water, but it was sitting on a table and I accidentally knocked it over - and the top snapped off. :( I can't do bamboo in the yard - the neighborhood here has all sorts of rules about what you can and can't do around your house and like to threaten you with lawsuits if you don't follow them.

Yours, on the other hand, look gorgeous!!

After the first season of growing you can basically neglect them and they will thrive, its a very low maintanance plant, when the wind hits them they make a wonderful rustling sound,, i love bamboo you can even eat the rhizomes,,,

Salaam Riz - this bamboo plant u have is brilliant!! But aren't bamboos known for spreading very quickly? What's the best way to stop them taking over your garden as I'm planning on getting a nice large bamboo to plant up against a fence but don't want it to go mad after a few years to the point where I need to use my machete!

Thanks T

Bamboos are perfect for screening..

Growing Bamboo is really rewarding especially if you grow them from seed, you can buy the seeds from E-bay like I did, and they are extremely cheap swell.

there are two types of bamboo

clump variety

runner variety

the latter once established will spread its rhizomes really quick and far probably into next doors garden :) so many people grow them in pots or build a rhizome barrier made out of plastic and around 1inch thick that will stop the rhizomes from spreading.

The clump variety takes longer to establish and the rhizomes will grow quite close to the root ball for the first few seasons and they very slowly they will spread but not too far for the mother.

I have the clump variety of bamboo and the runner both growing, because of our cool climate the runners spread real slow.

I have the following bamboo growing in the garden

'Phyllostachys Nigra ( black bamboo) runner variety

Fargesia Robusta (clump variety)

Phyllostachys Pubescence (runner variety) in container

It’s a very interesting plant to grow and very addictive, check out this website and make sure you get the right one for you…

The first two pictures are awesome!

thanks.

they are not my pics though.. growing bamboo is really addictive, each bamboo germinated looks like a single blade of grass, it has amazing structure and is one of the fastest growing plants in the world. One can do so many different things with bamboo it really is a versatile amazing plant. You can eat the rhizomes, make furniture, some countries use huge bamoo for construction scaffolding espically in poor countries around the world, you can make bridges out of bamboo and even smoking pipes, combs etc....

Riz

Growth
Bamboo offers many advantages, not the least of which is its amazing rate of growth. In fact, no other plant in the world grows faster than bamboo. Once established, bamboo plants will send up a number of shoots that will reach their full height in just one year, which makes bamboo the champion grower of all the woody plants. In fact, the record growth in a single twenty-four period is an astounding 47.6 inches! That's nearly four FEET in one day.
As for overall growth, although it's common to see bamboo plants 100 feet tall, the largest bamboo plant ever recorded grew to a height of 180 feet. It measured more than a foot in diameter and its walls were at least an inch thick. Such growth easily qualifies bamboo as the largest member of the grass family.
Strength
Another legendary trait is bamboo's strength. It has a tensile strength superior to mild steel, able to withstand pressure of 52,000 pounds per square inch, which is superior to graphite. That means that on top of being the fastest growing woody plant and the tallest grassy plant, bamboo is also the strongest woody plant, as well...twice as stable as oak or walnut when used in ladders or scaffolding.
Versatile
Bamboo is truly an amazing plant, but its uses as a resource have yet to be fully tapped. It can be selectively harvested every year with no impact on the environment and no need to replant, thereby saving thousands of man hours and fuel costs. It's an incredibly versatile building material, as well, providing income, food, and housing to 2.2 billion people around the globe...but we've only scratched the surface of bamboo's true potential.

eventually but not in the first couple of seasons, they need time for the root ball to get established, in uk climate if they get 20 feet i would love it :)

Riz
13th February 2009, 07:32 PM

when you have some spare cash buy yourself some bamboo seeds from e-bay. If you can germinate a date kernel you will have no problems with the bamboo, it kinda resembles the palm seedling as one single blade of grass emerges..

I haven't read the whole thread so I don't know if you've already answered this but doesn't bamboo die after it flowers? So you grow it really nice and big and lovely, and then suddenly it bolts and dies. It always kind of put me off bamboo a bit because it seems a bit pointless growing them if that happens... But I love bamboo so I hope I'm wrong:)

Riz
5th March 2009, 02:12 AM
its very rare to have a bamboo that is flowering and indeed they do die ( its a mystery why) but they only flower every 3 decades ( 30 years) so a long time.. bamboo must be the worlds most versatile plant/tree, you can eat it, wear it, make a house, furniture, cutting implements, in some 3rd world countries bamboo is used for scaffolding around buildings.. i have never been to a bamboo garden, but i have watched a few programmes on the t.v and i think fully grown bamboos are stunning...

5th March 2009, 02:20 AM
Wow those bamboos are definitely stunning! If it's only every 30 years it's ok, I though it was more often than that because I have a vague recollection of a friends bamboo flowering when I was little, and ever since then I've had a thing about it :P

maybe it's time to give the bamboo a chance... Although I don't know how I would find the space for it, they're better off in the ground aren't they?

Hemp is pretty versatile too, but it doesn't make as nice a sound when the wind blows through it :)

Wow - these look great. We are thinking of buying some from a nursery, so they will already be about 10 foot high at time of purchase. We want them for a similar position to yours, so they will act as a screen against the fence. I'm a bit worried about them spreading, even though I've heard that the clumping varieties don't do this (but thought they still had a tendency to stray?). Yours certainly look as if they are heading for outer space. Is there a maximum height they will grow? Don't want to offend the neighbours.

Riz
15th October 2010, 04:27 PM
The clumpers spread out really slow, Usually they stay clumped together for years,, mine are in there 3rd season and are still clumped up and none of the rhizomes have spread into next doors garden even though they are only 2 feet away from the fence..

i have 3 diff types

fargeisa robusta ( * bought as 1 ft plant)
2 Phyllostachys nigra*

Phyllostachys pubescence ( moso) grown from seed

they grow as tall and as wide as the hot weather permits.. i love the bamboo it has come one of my all favourite plants, i like the "whooooooooooshhhh" sound the leaves make when the wind hits them..

10 foot is going to be huge, it will have a good established rootball, so maybe you only need to buy one one divide the rootball and plant them in other places or in a pot :)

Thank you. All good information. We too love the sound of the breeze in the plants, which is one of the reasons why we want to put it up near the house. I'd like to plug a gap between the summer house and fence; and my husband wants to cover up the boundary fence. We may take your advice then and buy one clump and divide it.

Thanks.

yeah it should grow if you taken the rootball too..

is it the runner bamboo or the clumping variety !?

pwr_wrx
24th November 2010, 08:54 PM
The runner bamboo I think? its spread out all over but its really dense to the point where there are nothing but bamboo. no other plants...

Riz
24th November 2010, 09:09 PM
probably is the runner bamboo.. the rhizomes will start spreading soon, but winter is drawing in, so probably wont be doing much growing until the root ball is established and then in mid spring it will shoot out rhizomes everywhere.. It will be hard to contain the rhizomes and they will spread really far away from the actual rootball. so you can leave it like it if you prefer a bamboo grove in a couple of years or you can transfer the bamboo into a huge pot and grow it in there :)

Model Town Park has a 2.5 km track and Bamboos are growing all around the track on its left side as a fence. Here is what i captured today.

once root-ball gets established the rhizomes do spread all over the place, unless you dig down around and place plastic rhizome barrier 2 feet into the ground around the bamboo plant.

I was just looking for some bamboo pics when I came across this beautiful décor. A lady has shared pics of her home and she had a bamboo tree just like u have in ur garden and what she does is to cut a few pieces of bamboo each week to make her house pretty.lol.. So do u think is she doing her a favor using up these massive bamboo trees? Any way I love the way they look in living room and being completely free is the best part!!! You can do the same ?
just filled up ur favorite vase with water and the bamboo………

lol and check out this one -)

A very popular gift is the lucky bamboo plant. It is giving in order to bring the recipient good luck. For example just moved into a new home and someone may want to give you a small plant as a gift. It is believed tht owning a three stalked bamboo plant is meant to bring you joy and happiness. If you receive a five stalked bamboo plant, it should bring you good health.
A six stalked bamboo plant, given as a present, will bring you peace of mind and harmony. Finally, if you get an indoor bamboo plant as a gift that ends in eight, like, 8, 18, 28, or 38, it should bring you great wealth.

Sooooooooo prettttttttttty ..

I got all this info when i was trying to see how many types of bamboos are there actually and which one's u got in ur garden.

Beautiful pictures masha'Allah! I was thinking to plant some of this as a screening plant, but I'm not if I'll be able to stop it from taking over my garden.
