View Full Version : ....Peanuts!?!

Hehe :D

Okay so long story short - monkey nuts were thrown out in the garden, and I shelled some (this morn) and discovered a little shoot coming out of 1 (it's been raining on an off for a week so it was kinda soggy) and so I got it in my head to attempt to germinate some. It's probably too late in the season to leave them outside as my research indicates that they need a rather long growing season, but I can pot them inside.

The peanut is an interesting plant! It's really a leghume masquerading as a nut. As a plant it reaches 1 - 1.5 feet high and the bean pods develop on stems. When the pod is developed the stems bend over and the pods are plunged underground, where they mature. Nifty eh?

So has anybody else got any experience with growing peanuts? And if you wish to attempt to germinate them yourself, make sure you buy unroasted ones.

thanks. now i know what a peanut bush looks like. Ive been intresting in growing peanuts in u.k for a while and i know it can be done i saw it on another growing website a while ago ( i forget wich one) I really wanted some walnut trees aswell found a supplier in devon who sells the "rootstock" a cutting.. walnut trees are male and female so youll need 2 unless you graft a male rootstock onto the female tree...

Walnuts are Dioecious?
Whenever people talk about grafting plants though I imagine some sort of frankenstein plant :D Anywhoo, must save that lot for the tree forum!

I've got one, I'll post it up when I nab my sisters' memory card iA. Although if you do plant some of your own they tend to go mouldy real quick, so don't bury them too deep or too close to the surface (when being watered a couple became uncovered and got real mouldy.....they turned gooey :S)

A dodgy shot of a peanut sprout..the peanut itself is supposed to split (kinda like a bean). I really need to take better pictures, sorry :( you can see at the back the thick root

It kinda looks like an alien :p it's poking it's head above ground to look around :p

Heres a couple of pictures taken yesterday and today, it seems like theres been alot of progress in just one night. I have two peanut plants growing, one of them is growing faster than the other, one of them just began to split last night.

So far heres what happened (to keep my own thoughts straight):
I planted them (bout a centimetre underground) and a few that were deeper went mouldy (they do not like very wet soil!!), but two survived and two weeks later put out a thick root.

About a week later, they both developed a more complex root system (off of the thick root were thinner smaller roots, but still quite thick not yet stringy!) these extend about 5cm underground. While this is happening, inside the two halves of the peanut the tiny leaves/stem is forming. The peanut then splits when it is ready to reveal all of this.

I repotted them somewhere between the 3rd and the 5th of Sept? Thats when I discovered the complex roots.

Since then (couple of days later) the one with tiny leaves has split open wider, and the leaves have grown taller overnight, and the unopened one is splitting, and leaves are poking out.

Since repotting them, they have been inside under a lamp.
Edit:
Picture one is the fast growing one today, and the third is the same one last night.

Picture two is from today.

Sorry if that's confusing, the upload went funny :/

Second Edit: The peanut that is closed in the second pic (taken a couple of hours ago) now resembles the one in the third pic! Fast growing eh, the lamp is benefitting them alot, they're quite close to it (has a 40W bulb) and are getting both light and heat. (Sorry if the tenses in that sentence don't make sense, me head aches!)

looks cute..

the 40 watt bulb if its incandesant bulb it wont really do much atall,, it doesnt have the "spectrum of light" a plant needs to grow,

We planted some peanuts this year, but we have yet to dig them. Shortly after emergence, there was a major thrip infestation that I had to spray. Insha'Allah we will dig them soon and I will let you know how they did.

I had never heard them called monkey nuts before.

:D monkey nuts! Thats what we call them when they're in the shells still. Let us know how it goes!
The bulb might not be suitable but it's still doing a heck of a job! :D Actually, the slower peanut now seems to be outgrowing the first one now  they've shot up some more since this morn Alhumdulillah!

:(

The lightbulb has set on my peanut project for the moment alas :(

The second one was shooting up fast, but was a paler shade of green than the other so I thought it might have been etiolated (I love that word). So I put them outside for a couple of hours and went out.

I've just come back and they have been totally obliterated by something:( They're in pieces! Bottom half of peanut here, bit of stem there, bits everywhere.

They grew REALLY fast when I had them (in noticeable amounts, daily!) so why not give it a go? You posted 2 months ago, I might try them now! (If I can protect them from those pesky squirrels!
